Caught me off guard when i saw his name pop up as the engineer involved, Met him about 11 years ago and kept in contact ever so often since.

Hope he can make a recovery.

Why isn't his employer taking care of this on-the-job injury and all of its downstream repercussions 100% ?

Ray Murphy,

I wondered the same thing although I think the fund raiser is a nice idea.

There will always be some expenses just not covered. Even if his employer pays his full salary and covers all his medical bills, there will still be extra costs like additional fuel for numerous trips back and forth to the hospital, meals purchased because no one is home cooking, time taken off-work by family members (doubtful that is paid by Amtrak), last minute airline tickets for out-of-state relatives (very expense). All those "little" charges can easily add up.

A classic case of Rails taking care of Rails. Compassion amongst the brotherhood. Nice touch!

very nice to see on both counts ... altho railroaders have a so called "THING" to bond them together, it basically comes down to good people doing good things ...

As one who has been on that other side of the coin, I can tell you yes there a lot of other expenses that creep up on a family in a time like this, expenses that are not covered by Workers Comp or Health Insurance and so forth.

While he is in the hospital, he is NOT GETTING PAID. Nothing. His pay stopped Tuesday. So all the little things like house payments, car payments, food, gas, electric, still come rolling in. I gave, I plan to give more. How many of you have given?? These guys are our friends, neighbors, buddies. Lets help him out please...

Because he is employed by the railroad, and covered by FELA.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Employers_Liability_Act

The railroad is not required to compensate him for time lost unless and until he files suit against the railroad and wins his case. In the interim he and his family will likely only be paid through programs by the union and his retirement fund, which combined will not come close to matching his income. His treatment will probably be covered by insurance. At the same time there will be various other expenses for the family related to the accident, as described above.

Last I've heard Glenn is still in urgent care and has had several surgeries, but is showing signs of improvement.

I predict he wins the lottery and retires. Not too sure this is a FELA case, the truck drivers insurance will cough up the dough...

Either way, nobody's paying his income right now. He's 62 with 42 years in the industry... I'd have retired two years ago with that record.

It could be months before he see's any money from Amtrak. In the meantime, the bills keep piling up.

right off the bat he'll get sickness benefits a supplemental benefit any accident insurance he purchased ... in 5 months he'll apply for a permanent disability annuity(equal to retirement benefit) and will get awarded that retroactively having to repay whatever sickness and supplemental benefits he received ... he will still come out ahead ... then it will be surgery/rehab(if it hasn't happened yet) and then litigation and trial(if necessary) doubt that since he wasn't liable ... it's not an easy process to go through if he's not prepared ... i reccomend through permanent disablity experience with Amtrak myself EVERY railroader to purchase some sort of accidental ins ... trust me ... if ya don't have it and ya get injured ... YOU'RE SCREWED !!!! ... the railroad counts and preys on employees not being able to make ends meets to squeeze them financially to take a cheap settlement ...
