Two trains to carry guests to the Kentucky Derby
Lexington Herald-Leader
by Jim Warren
April 30, 2015

> Taking the train used to be the coolest way to get to the Kentucky
> Derby — and for some fortunate folks, it still is.
>
> Two special trains bound for the Derby were in Lexington earlier this
> week, getting a final sprucing-up for the big event at the RJ Corman
> Railroad Group's yards at the foot of Buchanan Street.
>
> One was the 17-car Governor's Derby Train, run by CSX, which will
> carry Gov. Steve Beshear, his family, state officials, friends and
> guests to Louisville for the Run For The Roses. In addition, there
> was a four-car Corman train that the railroad group will run to the
> Derby to carry company officials, their families and guests.
>
> Both trains took on supplies Wednesday and got buffed, polished and
> prepared to welcome Derby guests.
>
> The Governor's Train traveled to Frankfort on Thursday and will
> depart from there Saturday morning with the governor's entourage. The
> Corman train will depart from Lexington on Saturday morning, bound
> for the Derby...

Corman owns the line from Lexington to Anchorage (a northeastern Louisville suburb). His crews operate over CSX in Louisville all the time. I would think Corman crews would operate the Corman train, and CSX crews would operate the CSX train.

Nothing more uglier than a garage door on the back of a rail passenger car!

The rail line is the former L&N EK Subdivision, in later years referred to as the "Old Road" sub - actually part of the first railroad in the state.  RJC leases the line (they might own it now), and has upgraded it with long-deferred maintenance since taking over from CSX.  Corman crews are qualified on CSX and at least a few CSX Louisville Terminal people are still qualified on the Old Road, and are hand-picked for the service.  The fomers - me included - will be out in force tomorrow morning to watch the parade of slow-moving passenger trains...
