Harriman Combo Coach On NB I-5 Williams, CA?
Author: norm1153

A friend of mine observed a Harriman short combo coach being trucked north on I-5 by Williams, CA.  This occurred I believe yesterday
(Thursday).  It was graffitti-clean.  Would anyone know any more about this coach, that is, where it came from, and destination?

40' Harriman Baggage-RPO, origianlly S.P. 6xxx, former S.P. (Bayshore yard) caboose 475.  SP donated to CSRM.  CSRM donated to PLA (Niles Canyon Railway) when collection reduced to fit smaller storage track space. Traded to Roots of Motive Power (Willits, CA) for trucks etc to restore NCRy equipment.  Moved Wed May 20 by truck: carbody on one truck, (freight car or caboose) trucks on another flatbed truck.

OK, good information.  Thanks for your reply.  Roots wins, and NCRY wins.

Re: SP T&NO 250
Author: yvrr These steel, 40-foot-long, Harriman-designed cars were built by Pullman in 1911 for the Texas and New Orleans Railway (T&NO), a Southern Pacific Railroad subsidiary. They were designed for mail and RPO service on routes which did not warrant full-size RPO cars. One of these cars, No. 193, was sold to the Yosemite Valley Railroad in 1938 where it was renumbered 107. RPO 107 served in mail service on the YV until loss of the mail contract in October 1943. After abandonment of the YV, the car was then sold to the Virginia and Truckee Railroad and renumbered 23. When the V&T was abandoned, the scrapped kept the car and eventually sold it to the Pacific Locomotive Association. It is still on PLA's roster and painted and lettered for the YV. [ Reply To This Message ] [ Quote ] [ Private Reply ] Date: 03/31/14 12:22

The 5 cars built to Pullman Plan 2450-A and in Lot 3904 were built for:
40' Steel Postal Cars
ML&T - No. 191 - 192
LW - No. 193
H&TC - No 250 - 251

ML&T 191 became T&NO 191
ML&T 192 became T&NO 192
LW 193 became T&NO 193 then YV 107 to V&T 23 then as an office car, finally to PLA
H&TC 250 became T&NO 250 then SP 6008 to MOW 2132
H&TC 251 became T&NO 251 to SP 6009 to 475 (caboose) to RL&HS to CSRM to PLA (addenda 5-20-2015... traded to Roots of Motive Power)
The cars were modified in (almost) every iteration.

The SPT&HS Head End Passenger car book is really a must-have for anyone pursuing modeling "Harriman" (Common Standard) cars. This is especially true in the modifications made as they passed through the system - lots of photos that would modify the appearance of the car as they changed in the 30s form the as-built look.
