Vermonters and Bernie on guns on Amtrak
Author: Lurch_in_ABQ

 The Daily Beast article
"...Gray Stevens of the Vermont Sportsman’s Club hadn’t heard of it either. “Oh, I don’t know anything about that,” he said. “Everybody that hunts takes their vehicle, goes to hunting camps. I don’t know anything about people using trains to go hunting. Once they get there, what are they gonna do, take a cab to the woods?”...."

READ ARTICLE FIRST!!!! Don't be dumb like me and make a post (and then delete it) without reading the article first. Bernie Sanders apparently was a big supporter of guns to be carried on trains. The quote is a little misleading, but one has to read the article first.....

First things first,

Amtrak runs in other states than Vermont.
Hunters do indeed use Amtrak to travel to different places on the Amtrak system and sometimes, they do it for hunting.
People are indeed able to bring the firearms on airplanes. Yes, there is a more secure way they transport them. And for good reason.

I'm glad Bernie voted for constitutional rights. I may decide to travel some place and I usually would like to bring my gun with me. There's nothing wrong or illegal with that.

I never thought I would agree with Bernie on anything. But he's right on with this. Of course there is no way to actually check to see if guns are being carried on trains. The terrorists know that. So its a good idea, hunting or not for people to be able to protect themselves from a terrorist attack. Without the American soldiers on the train in France, there is no telling what the carnage would have been.

It would be helpful to first read http://www.amtrak.com/firearms-in-checked-baggage before continuing the thread.
Unloaded firearms can be transported on Amtrak in a locked baggage compartment.

What the American soliders did on the train was truly heroric and admirable. But they did it without guns.

Moroever, I'm not aware of any recent mass shootings or other attacks being thwarted by "good guys with guns." I'm not saying it has never happened, but if it has it's very rare, which takes some wind from the sails of those who cite this is a reason for allowing concealed carry.

It would have also been helpful to know that neither of Amtrak's two trains serving Vermont, the Ethan Allen Express and Vermonter, have baggage cars which allow hunters to travel with guns.

THanks Rule G for determining the facts, something that is in short supply when gun fnatics assert their rights.

could it be because predators who commit mass shootings do so in "gun free" zones where they KNOW the chances are slim that anybody is going to dump them........

If I remember correctly, during the recent attack on the college campus in Oregon, several vetrans who were students at he college had weapons in their cars, decided not to
use them to go after the perp because they realized that they could be mistaken for the real perp and be shot themselves.

Since most of the perpertrators of mass killings are mentally disturbed and actually seem to want to die, it would seem unlikely that the majority deliberatly choose "gun free" zones. Since concealed weapons are permitted in all States, so  how would a "perp" know who has a gun? You thinking does not match with the facts.

Wrong. Again.

NJ has exceptionally strict rules on concealed carry. Even ex-cops are restricted.

Ordinary folks are just sitting ducks for the bad guys.

You can't "carry" in Washington DC. But, that is not a State. So really, I was right the first time.
