Is the current Amtrak station in Raleigh the former Southern RR facility?  Was there a Seaboard Air Line station?  I am looking southeast tonight out of the Holiday Inn and can see a north-south line on the west side of downtown.

You are correct that the current Amtrak stop is the Southern station. There was an SAL station in Raleigh and I am not sure of its currect status.

The SAL station is a garden store and you can walk through it and out on the old platforms. It's off of Peace St just to the east of the tracks. Those North-South tracks are the NS and CSX tracks heading up to their yards. Some cool bridges on that little stretch parallell to Glenwood Ave. And if you have some free time, Boylan Bridge Brewpub is a good place to watch trains.

I believe a new Raleigh station costing about $85M is about to begin construction.

Being that the Star is now only 7 cars, no. Even with what was a normal consist of 9 or 10 cars, no double stop was ever required..

I believe a double stop was sometimes required when the station opened in 1985, but the platform was quickly extended to prevent that. I don't know what will happen to the current station when the new one opens, but I've heard the plan is demolition.

By the way, the headhouse of the 1890 Union Station is still standing although no one from pre-1942 (when the SAL station opened) would recognize it.

It appears that the old SAL station still has trainsheds in the back. That is pretty neat.
Not to mention the "Seaboard Cafe" on the streetside along with the garden shop.

the Piedmonts from Charlotte use the Amtrak station on the NS RofW correct and reverse into the layover/maintenance yard  ??? ... where would passenger trains platform if the under study new service is routed down the former SAL from Norlina ??? ... would the present Amtrak station be extended and built inside the wye to use for trains using the former SAL to/from Norlina ??? ...

Word on the street is that the present Amtrak station (the previous Southern station) will be demolished, but it's not definite yet. The new "Union Station" is being built in the previously open field across the NS track from the present station, inside the wye.

As mentioned above, the old Raleigh Union Station building still stands and is occupied by offices.  It's on Dawson St on the corner of W. The new station will include a stub for a platform on the Raleigh-Norlina-Petersburg line... if it's ever built.

When I saw this thread, I recalled that the Seaboard building was moved years ago from its orginal site. Googled it and refreshed my memory that this was in 1977, when the state of NC was expanding its government building sites in the downtown area.   See this link for more:
