Capitol Corridor Reports on Superbowl Ridership
Author: reindeerflame

From today's email from the Capitol Corridor:

Stopping within steps of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the Capitol Corridor proved to be a convenient and comfortable way for football fans to get the big game. Unofficial ridership to Super Bowl 50 was just over 1,000, a weekend record-breaker for the Capitol Corridor. For San Francisco 49er home games, Capitol Corridor typically carries around 600 passengers.

Was there any extra service offered, or was it the same old Sunday schedule?  How about Caltrans?

As I understand it, four Capitol Corridor trains were timed to serve the Superbowl, including one that originated in Martinez.   A special schedule was issued for this day only.  Also, seating was all-reserved, unlike the customary practice of unreserved seating in this corridor.  A number of passengers apparently used BART from San Francisco to access the Capitols at OKC (Coliseum).

The ridership of 1,000 is a reasonable, if not an outstanding, accomplishment.  It appears that operating conditions were smooth, which is the most important part.

Caltrans had a special schedule.    See other postings under passenger trains.

Trains 748, 727, 731 each had six cars.

I presume, then, that the ridership figure given in the original post is ONLY for the Capitol Corridor service and does not include CalTrain riders.

February 8, 2016=13pxThousands of football fans representing the orange and navy, and the black, teal and silver packed Caltrain over the weekend, increasing regular weekend ridership.=13pxOn Saturday, Caltrain carried 29,567 riders on its system who were headed up to The City to partake in the numerous Super Bowl activities and concerts.  On Super Bowl Sunday, Caltrain carried another 9,262 passengers to the Mountain View Caltrain Station for the Big Game, where sports fans transferred to VTA light rail to take them directly to Levi’s Stadium. Caltrain's total ridership over Super Bowl weekend was 38,829 passengers. Caltrain’s average weekend ridership for Saturday and Sunday combined is usually around 26,241 passengers.=13pxBut Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers fans weren’t the only ones enjoying the fun and festivities. The week leading up to the Super Bowl, many Bay Area football fans donning their best red and gold jerseys, and silver and black apparel also packed onto Caltrain to visit various attractions, such as Super Bowl City in Justin Herman Plaza and the NFL Experience in Moscone Center.=13pxTo accommodate all the extra riders during the week, Caltrain increased capacity by adding extra train service to ensure that football fans could check out all the great exhibits, concerts and events in the Bay Area, including Media Day at the SAP Center in San Jose and Santa Clara University’s Super Bowl Celebration.  =13pxIn addition, Caltrain provided friendly ambassadors onboard trains and at select stations to assist passengers with their overall football experience. ###

Given all the plans by the CC folks, 1000 passengers is a moderate number.  They created way more capacity than that.  They could have carried lots more.  Then again, being it was a non-49er Superbowl game, there probably weren't many locals who wanted to go, which hurt ridership.  Some "out of towners" may have been unaware of the service.

Very interesting, though, how CALTRAIN carried 9x more passengers to the game, via a slower routing (CALTRAIN-VTA transfer).  Great for CALTRAIN--those Mt. View VTA trains have probably never been that highly used or full as they were that day.

The 9,000 plus 1,000 passengers is a decent number. About 15% of the total attending?

I got curious on how Levi's stadium is serviced by all the public transportation.
Their website section: http://www.levisstadium.com/plan-your-visit/public-transportation/
Very clever how it changes carriers as you scroll down.  Great web design!
A lot of sports venues barely mention public transit on their websites.

And, I do agree that excess of 10% is good for a US sporting event.  Just thought of one more thing.....bus lines must have also been involved......so the public transit totals could exceed 20%.  Even so, it was probably a nightmare for those who drove to the game.  The local road infrastructure was not built with the stadium in mind, let alone the amusement park next door.  AA
