I rode No. 14 on 22 Jan and the Business class was between the Diner and the Observation Lounge.

Comet, This IS picking nits.....but, it's a Sightseer Lounge, not Observation Lounge, and I do know that many people use that misnomer.....common use of a misnomer does not make it correct.  An Observation Lounge is an end of train car, with a view to the rear.....there are basically three types....open platform (back porch), teardrop (rounded end), and blunt end (squared off).   As a big fan of observation cars, I guess the misuse of the term bothers me more than most folks.  AA

Even though it isn't one, many Amtrak employees refer to the lounge car as the "observation lounge" in their PA announcements on the trains. Joe public doesn't know or care about the distinction.

Was it an entire car or just part of a coach.  How did it differ from coach.

On #11 Febuary 05 they had 5 people getting off  in LA and most of the trip from Portland to LA was 10 people at the most I saw in the car. They have 1 coach attend that is just for the business car.

Given Boardman's memo to employees posted elsewhere here, I'd say that this attendant's days on the job are numbered.

Could one assume that given the higher cost of a seat than coach, the environment in the car is also better?

When I did it we were in the bottom of a coach but had leather seats and it was very comfortable plus had excellent WiFi.  Since then they have used a fullm coach but I haven't ridden it like that yet.

Yes the bottom seats in the car were leather but not the top. Only saw one person seating in the bottom.

Today, Thursday the 11th, both #14 and #11 were set up like this:   Baggage, transition sleeper or crew dorm if you like, 2 sleepers, diner, business class car, lounge car, 2 coaches.  44 axles.

He already announced his retirement a couple weeks ago, effective at the end of the year.
