Passenger Trains > Siemens Charger SC-44 Interior and Exterior photosDate: 06/18/16 04:11 Siemens Charger SC-44 Interior and Exterior photos Author: RCPE_Hogger These pictures were sent to me by a good friend of mine, of the interior and exterior details of the new Siemens Charger locomotives. These two are Illinois DOT chargers headed to, I believe, Colorado for testing.

Date: 06/18/16 05:58 Re: Siemens Charger SC-44 Interior and Exterior photos Author: Limited-Clear WOW!! Who designed the side window opening up and blocking the control panel?!?!?!? Most likely someone who doesn't operate locomotives and says "It looked good on paper." MAJOR DESIGN FLAW!!!!! I'm sure engineers will not be happy (for good reasons) with that!!!!!

Have you spoken with the Siemens design department about this? Have you been in the locomotive? Is it remotely possible that you don't have access to all of the facts? If not, I'd be hesitant to go screaming "MAJOR DESIGN FLAW!!!!!" when it is just possible that there is a very good reason for that window being the way it is. I agree that it looks a little strange, but then I don't have all the facts. Pretty much just a snow plow protecting the front trucks.

There is very little air circulation in a P40/42 when the air quits without bracing the cab doors open. This looks to be even worse.

With the exception of the "Acknowledge" button and the sander switch, all of the switches are for turning outside lights on and off. Ignoring the "Acknowledge" switch because I don't know what it is for and maybe the sander switch (would an engineer want the window open if sand was needed?), I don't think having the window open would be a big deal operationally. But, then again I'm an armchair engineer. Date: 06/18/16 08:40 Re: Siemens Charger SC-44 Interior and Exterior photos Author: a6m20 It's even got a cup holder! Thanks for posting the photos. Taken when/where?

Interesting to see a re-appearance of strobe lights, which at least are on top of the cab rather than in the face as they were on the GE designs. And a rear door window comes back, after being welded back over in the early GE P40 days. There does seem to be a lack of visibility behind the crash post, but the crash protection makes it worthwhile. Forces the crew to get tunnel vision whether they want to or not. Being able to see something coming behind the post at that angle is pretty irrelevent though, you wouldn't be able to do anything about it nohow. Is that handle up there in front of the window for the ejection seat activator? Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 06/18/16 10:04 by NewRiverGeorge. KC - wing windows do look strange in design Date: 06/18/16 08:54 Re: Siemens Charger SC-44 Interior and Exterior photos Author: meh Thanks for posting the photos.
Does the throttle have the same "forward for more power" configuration that the ACS-64s and the Acela power cars have? It looks as if it does, with the "8" at the front, which I think would be opposite of the P42s and other diesels that are used on the corridors in IL, CA, and OR/WA. That button is to respond to the alerter. The engineer must either push that button or operate something on the control stand within a set time or the brakes automatically apply. The other problem I see with the inward opening window is it potentially exposes the engine crew to injury in a collision to a greater extent than windows that slide vertically or horizontally. The collision with a gasoline truck in Florida a few decades ago in which the engine crew survived comes to mind. The window could be susceptible to being blown in. While these windows should be nice and snug now, they will get less so after some time in service. Mary McPherson Dongola, IL Diverging Clear Productions |
