The view from Philly - PVs and variety of stuff
Author: jonjonjonjon

The heat was temporarily broken by a thunderstorm yesterday so I ventured out to the Amtrak parking deck at north side of 30th St. station in Philly, and regretted I hadn't been out there for the storms - would have been fantastic! (There are covered and enclosed viewing possibilities there in the event of bad weather).
What I found were Bennet Levin's PVs in the yard, along with ex-NYC then CP 1949 obs Babbling Brook. And...the usual parade of Amtrak and NJT trains.

The one mystery there was Amtrak ex-metroliner cab car 10005 and its odd boxes on the roof - mounted on the pantograph mount. Looks like catenary inspection equipment? Looks like cameras and spotlights.

Not just catenary, from what my friends tell me.  It can also do track inspections.  All sorts of lasers on it.  Can do real-estate photos, inspect ballast depth, all sorts of uses, all at 125 mph.

Nice photos.  Different angle on some of that stuff that we don't normally see.

Stay safe with all the goofiness in town this week.

10005 may have additional duties, but it says "CATENARY MEASUREMENT" on the side.
