It later did service on Amtrak's western routes (Amtrak 9463) until 1985 retirement. Since you gave histories for some of the cars, here is the history for Tioga Pass:

The shell of the car was assembled by National Steel Car and then fitted out by Canadian National's Point St. Charles, Quebec shops in 1959. It was one of 12 similar cars. Originally assigned to the Mountain Division Vice President in Edmonton, Alberta, the car was sold in 1992. We purchased the car in 1997 and have extensively upgraded it inside and out. Since its Amtrak certification in 2003, Tioga Pass has traveled approximately 300,000 miles in the US and Canada.

So which car is Mudrock The King Chris Guenzler riding in?  Will he write us a story?

re: SP Birch Grove.  Birch Grove (Amtrak No. 2696, then 2451, ex-SP 9020) was an Amtrack name; SP never named their LW sleepeiing cars.

The SP Budd Sunset sleepers were numbered 9000 thru 9029.  9025 thru 9029 were the blunt end cars for end-of-train service.  All SP Budd sleepers were delivered between March 1950 and June 1950.

I think it's safe to say this trip is a little bit out of his price range. It would be more realistic to expect a story of riding a Metrolink train from Santa Ana to Tustin because the very rare SCAX 800 is supplying the power.

Some more photos of the transformation inside the car. The first two photos are the original interior as received from CN. They were taken in 1999. The last photo is from 2014. Since then, new carpet has been installed.
