Speed limit is 110. Depends on what track you were on also, in addition to speed restrictions, possibly following another train, there are several factors as to why 110 wasn't reached. Maybe the phone was off a bit too...

My iPhone 6 took these pictures using a free app called Speedbox.  The first is on the Sunset Limited last year somewhere in Texas.  The second was on an American Airlines flight London to Los Angeles.

At one time, some Heritage diners and some Heritage baggage cars were limited to 90; the remainder of Heritage fleet was limited to 110. Not every LD train on the NEC has a diner. No Heritage baggage car still runs on the NEC.

At one time, Viewliner sleepers and some Amfleet II cars were limited to 110 account trucks. I believe the trucks on Amfleet II cars were fixed to allow 125 -- it's standard for the Carolinian and Piedmont to run 125 today -- but I don't know about the sleepers.

Perhaps the 81 mph is off since a conventional Amtrak train can't exceed 79 mph?

I've noticed that reported speed will sometimes move 2-3 mph esp on wooded sections of the CSX lines.  My guess is the system uses multiple cell towers, and satellites to calculate changes in its location. When a satellite is obscured by trees, the recorded speed changes.

FRA allows up to 3 over for short time. Amtrak can excede 79MPH in certain areas. The lake shore limited can get up to 110 in some areas with the diesels.

It's been a couple of year ago but I was on 66 and 67 between DC and Boston and we were topping out at 113 MPH for a large portion of the trip.  Never exceeded that for even a second as far as I could tell.

On train 141 2 weeks ago, left Philly 5 minutes behind an Acela, pulled into WAS 9 minutes early / 10 minutes behind the Acela (for $49). Must have been going pretty fast.

If the track exceeds FRA class 4 standards, Amtrak can exceed 79 (assuming the line is protected by a signal system, which it always is). This happens in various places around the country: portions of LA-San Diego, portions of the ex-ATSF route of the Southwest Chief, portions of Chicago-Detroit (the case at one time, at least). Charlotte-Greensboro, NC will eventually go 90.

Even MARC trains go up to 110 between New Carrolton and Bowie MD.  ACELA goes up to 150 between CT and RI.  Also very fast between Trenton and New Brunswick NJ.

Just because the max speed limit on LD trains outside the Southwest Chief route is 79 mph, doesn't mean that the trains don't occasionally succeed it for short periods of time.   All 4 of my GPS devices have shown LD trains in northern California hitting 80 and 81 mph for periods of time up to a minute.   Even the hotbox detectors on these lines have announced speeds in excess of 79 mph as our passenger train has passed the detector.
