Niagra Falls on VIA
Author: Railrev

I am interested in riding a VIA train to Niagra Falls.  It looks like the best way to do an All Train trip is from Windsor to Toronto, overnight, then the Amtrak/VIA train to Niagra Falls. If we rode Amtrak from Chicago to Detroit, what is th best way to get to VIA in Windsor?

Thanks for the help.

Is the purpose to ride VIA Rail or visit Niagara Falls ?
I would just take the Lake Shore to Depew, take a taxi 2 miles to the Airport, and take a Greyhound or Trailways bus to NFL.

Taxi to Windsor or for a better experience Metro Cars. Make sure when you order you tell them you will be crossing the border so the driver has the appropriate documents to get across. A more complicated method would be taxi to the tunnel entrance, then the "Tunnel Bus" across. Then another taxi to the VIA station which is a few miles east of downtown Windsor. Sucks that the International is no longer available as an option. If your trip isn't until sometime later this year TBD, the new Detroit light rail system will be up and running. It runs just a block from the Detroit Amtrak Station down Woodward Ave. and ends near the Tunnel entrance. You could catch the bus from there.

When you get to Detroit, head to the Detroit Tunnel via taxi or transit.  The tunnel which is right downtown has Windsor Transit running through it.  (see link below) The only train you could connect with in Windsor is 78 departing at  17:45 and arriving in Toronto at 21:51.  Do you have to go to Toronto?

Depending upon when you go, GO Transit offers train service to the falls on selected weekends. Depending on connections, that might offer the ability to transfer to from Via to GO at someplace like Aldershot or Oakville without spending the night in Toronto (emphasis on might)

Downtown Windsor is a gentle and pleasant walk (without luggage) to the VIA station, mostly along the attractive park along the waterfront. The distance is approximately 2.7 kilometres or 1.7 miles. I always walk it when in Windsor and it takes us about 40 minutes with a short rest on a park bench half-way.

GO Transit has not announced the "seasonal"  Niagara Falls service for this year, but for the past few years it has run from the last week in June until Labour Day plus Thanksgiving week-end. There is one round-trip on Friday evenings, three on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. This schedule information is from 2016.
