WOW.  That wasn't just a little snow thrown onto the platform and the passengers.  I suspect they were not very happy.  Sorry, but I have no idea when or where it was.

I'm sorry, but looking at that pile of snow I would have backed off.... I imagine some of these robots will sue.

I bet the people that plowed the platform put it on the tracks!
That was part of the reason there was so much for the engine to hit.

And where would you have backed off to? The wave of snow easily reached across the entire platform. The train crew should have been paying closer attention and slowed down prior to the platforms. Safety first! If this had been my train, you can bet I'd have given them a piece of my mind.

Damn commuters!

Always getting in the way of running the trains.

As pointed out in the thread below,
1. The people on the platform were actually waiting for this train,
2. Rhinecliff has a low-level center island platform configuration, so there's no place to back off to other than the other side of the canopy posts,
3. The train overshot the stop.

Furthermore, this was the first train through after Tuesday night's storm.

So you'd be OK with your train being late, because the crews were going slow just in case there was snow over the rails?  From more than a few carlengths away, it is virtually impossible to tell how far over the rails now and ice might be.

You also apparently missed the fact that nearly everyone on the platform had their cameras out, getting ready to video the train plowing through the snow.

What were the people standing there thinking?  Yes, the snow might hit you if you were standing on the far side of the platform but not with the impact that it would have if you were right there like the gal in the white beanie.  Wouldn't be surprised to hear she was knocked down because of the snow...  Is it too soon to start Darwin awards this year?

As a veteran commuter by rail of over 25 years, absolutely. Delays due to weather are not unusual. That crew is lucky nobody was seriously injured.

Oh so that was the only place where the snow was over the rails? They certainly should have been expecting the conditions, that's their job.

Didn't miss that fact at all. Nice try.

Gal, The answer to your question is an emphatic YES, now and forever.  Use of that term does a huge disservice to Mr Darwin.

As someone who has actually OPERATED trains for 25 years, I can tell you that you can't tell HOW DEEP it is until you are nearly on top of it.  Snow isn't always uniform in depth.  When everything is a uniform color, it makes it much tougher to discern features (such as snow drifts) from a distance that allows you to slow down in time.

But, I digress ... you have ridden trains for 25 years, so therefore you somehow know more than the people who actually earn a living doing this stuff.

sounds like they should have slowed  AND STOPPED so they wouldn't have to back up

No ... he doesn't.  He has commuted by rail for 25 years, so he therefore believes he knows more than people who actually work in the field.  Probably stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night too. ;-)

I'm  sure they were trying.  Even with periodic running brake tests, it doesn't take long for enough snow and ice to get between the shoes and the wheels, to affect your braking distances.

You should see how far the snow flies when you hit it at 79 MPH.

The people standing close to the tracks on the platform are idiots.  End of story.  Even if the train was only going 15 mph, they would have been hit by flying snow, and, potentially, any chunks of ice contained in that snow.  Heavy, wet snow has a lot of mass, and the train essentially instantly accelerates that mass to its speed when it hits it.  When that mass impacts a human body, it's going to do something.  If the people are too stupid to figure out that little bit of elementary physics, then they deserve whatever happens to them.  I've seen both locomotive pilot plows and railroad rotary plows throw chunks of ice the size of bowling balls.  It is ALWAYS best to stand well clear of any track with snow on it when a train is passing by.
