Thanks for the links.  Key phrase in one of the stories describing problems around the Gateway Center's prospects for becoming a fun place to go is "because of Utah's restrictive liquor laws".  Sounds like it hasn't changed much since I lived there.

With all due respect restrictive liquor laws are the least of the Gateway's problems. The area is dealing with serious health and safety issues related to the 1100 bed homeless shelter next door.

And competition from the newer City Creek mall just down the street. But I noticed today more apartments being built behind the Gateway so that might help increase their traffic.

When I worked in the depot the main entertainment attraction was the Sun Tavern across the street.
