Waving From a Train
Author: SDP40F600

Crew members of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, which operates between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio, are encouraged to wave at people trackside at stations and within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Here are a couple of crew members of a National Park Scenic train greeting those standing along the tracks in Peninsula.

Waving at and from trains is a long-standing practice that is about as American as apple pie. It is not just crew members who wave at those trackside. The passengers sometimes get into the act. In the top photograph a man waves from lounge-observation car Saint Lucie Sound, a former Florida East Coast car. In the other image children look out the window at the station site in Peninsula.

Ha! Note this is in sharp contrast to Amtrak training where the strict union contract terms are to scowl, frown, frighten, berate, and intimidate.

FWIW, I enjoy the human side of railroading also. There's a lot more to it other than Diesels, landscape, wrecks, etc. Thanks for sharing those.

Rode Roaring Camp's Beach train this past Saturday. The return train in the late afternoon had about 700 passengers on it. Many were children who enjoyed waving at people along the way...

I know a couple of engineers who got in hot water when they got ny red signals leaving LAUPT because they were waving at someone instead of tending to what they should have been tending to.
