I live in Portland and, yes, we have our share of homeless and vagrants and, no, they have nothing to do with this situation. I also ride MAX on a regular basis and feel safer than I do driving in our insane traffic. As a matter of fact, I will ride two light rail trains to get to my volunteer job at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center tomorrow and I'll bet that I'm around to post again later if I wish.

The lack of mental health services, and lack of confinement of some people with issues is a serious problem in the US.

It's not just a "big city" problem.

Anecdotal.

MAX used to be much safer, but the system has become much more of a bumfest plus "culturally enriched" in recent years. With both comes crime. See: other cities transit systems.

Good Lord......"commie homeless vagrants?" This has all appearances of a hate crime committed by what has been termed "a known white supremacist." Racist incidents are on the rise, this is one of many around our nation.
I don't know that I have it in me, as did the three guys who intervened.....true heroes in all senses of the word. I think we, as a nation, are way too tolerant of hatred and violence.....we seem to be getting what we deserve, and it is not a pretty picture. We can not only do better, we once did do better....WAY better, as a nation.

That is a stupid, right-winged, garbage article. They'll say and do anything to trash passenger rail. It has nothing to do with urban or hate crime.

You are far more likely to be killed in a car accident than be killed riding public transit.
People also get shot and killed regularly DRIVING in Chicago, whether it be in the South Side, West Side, North Side, Dan Ryan, or Lake Shore Drive. No mention of that by Cato.

The hate crime aspect can add some time to a murder or assault conviction. And, if charged as a deprivation of civil rights / hate crime, you can get a federal trial in addition to a state trial.

It's part of a PC culture that has pervaded the US in recent years. Yes, murder is the ultimate hate crime. I don't see the point in figuring out why the perpetrator 'hated' the victim. BTW, it seems that according to these laws, hate crimes only apply to certain victims - i.e. victims of a certain groups, but not others.
