Passenger Trains > What's up in New Mexico

Hi - I'm a new member and have been watching (or is that lurking?) for the past month or so. I am getting ready to take my grandson on the SW Chief from Chicago, and have noticed that there seem to be a lot of delays to #3 when it gets on the Raton Pass segment. For example, today (6/26) it arrived at LaJunta a few minuted early, and left 3 1/2 hours late. Since #4 wasn't due for many hours, I assume it was held there for some other reason.

Does anyone know if work is being done, and if so why they can't juggle it around the two trains a day that use the line?

Dropping ties. But usually that starts after #3.
Some scared railroading over there. The DS won't run a train with Amtrak within 5 hrs. And Meets Verboten!

Look at how late 4 arrived the trip before and you will find your answer. Crews cannot immediately return to duty.
