I miss when they had up 15 cars and book end Units on a train. During the Del Mar Race Season.
And during Thankgiving

I guess Amtrak isn't able to have 14 car trains now days.

Anything more then 11 cars and two loco's is all the station tracks can handle, unless using the joint freight passenger line.   If this is used, then the equipment has to be split or moved elsewhere waiting for its return.  Some years back, when reconstructing the yard, the interlocking was made just south of Ash Street IF my memory is correct.  I recall speaking to the then Supt of Amtrak in this regards.

Sure in the old days, Santa Fe could handle 21 cars, but that is history along with lots of other items.

It has been widely posted here that the annual San Diego crush of both the Del Mar Racing and Comic Con are going on resulting in extra equipment being put into service.

It was parked on the outermost track from the station, the one I've seen most often used for through freight movements. There was no more room at the south end with cutting off access to the adjacent track, and fueling for the other tracks. At the north end, there was room for on additional passenger car at most.

Amazing how SD has chnaged in 10 years. Now its just a city , up until around 2007 7 it still had a quaintness to it.
