Ladder 4 Meets Amtrak 8
Author: walstib

Seattle Ladder 4 meets Amtrak 8 where Wall Street crosses the tracks at Alaskan Way tonight.

The ladder truck was rolling with lights and sirens to a call. The train was holding short of the crossing, waiting for a BNSF maintenance crew to fix a troublesome switch before they could continue.

The train ended up taking a two-hour hit because of the switch problem.

Thanks.

I heard the truck's siren but I wasn't sure where it was coming from. But I set up the shot with the train just in case it was coming that way.

Haven't seen one of those old ladder trucks with rear driver in ages, didn't know they still used them, nice catch.

All 18 ladder trucks in San Francisco operate with tillermen. It makes it possible to get around tight corners on narrow streets.

Many Fire departments have gone back to tiller towers or ladder trucks as they can maneuver better that a standard tower or ladder truck check u-tube out for Tiller fire trucks videos to see them

I wonder who gets dinged for an at-fault accident, front or rear ?

Both. They're both on intercom and coordinate their maneuvers.

In the Dept. I retired from, the front end guy was responsible if an accident is blamed on the truck. Tiller men can only steer. No brake pedal back there. Intercom connects the 2 ends, with the tiller having to just speak. The front end guy has to push a button to talk to the tiller man.

I was training at a department that had a tillered truck company. They took me for a ride to show the maneuverability of the tiller. We went into a cul-de-sac. The tiller went in turned and came out. The engine (pumper truck) had to do a three point turn to come out. Then it was my turn at the tiller. It took two weeks to wipe the smile off my face.

let's say a ladder/truck was NOT responding to an emergency and failed to stop for a stop sign and caused an accident. in california, the driver/engineer of the ladder/truck would be listed as P-1 in the traffic accident report and in violation of of 22450 cvc.

the tillerman would NOT be cited......

Yeah, blowing a Stop sign would be the driver's fault since he's is the only one with access to the brake pedal. Duh...

But if they clipped a car while making say a right turn, that's a different story since they're BOTH steering.

Don't see many tandem axle ladder trucks, that's different to me.

your post SPECIFICALLY stated that BOTH the driver/engineer and tillerman would be "dinged" for an "at fault" accident. it said NOTHING about specific circumstances of an "at fault" accident where just the driver/engineer would be at fault and NOT the tillerman.

i just gave you and example of an "at fault" accident where the tillerman would NOT be at fault.

I can imagine Lynn, saw one do that heading to a major house fire, talk about cutting the corner!
