Retired Amtrak Services?
Author: SD80MACfan

While reading an article on the return of Amtrak to Roanoke, there was a mention of an Amtrak train called the Mountaineer that used to run over the N&W through Roanoke. This was later replaced by the Hilltopper. I had never heard of either of these trains but they brought to memory two of Amtrak's retired Michigan services, the International and the St. Clair, as well as the still unnamed (to me) Chicago-Nashville-Florida passenger train. This got me thinking, does anyone have a list of other Amtrak trains like the ones mentioned that ran but were replaced or retired completely?

What was that RPO train that Amtrak ran on the NE Corridor until about '76? Was that a stand alone train, or just an RPO discontinued on a train that wasn't cut?
SR

There was the Seattle-Spokane "Expo" that ran just the one Summer (1974). Cool train: 2 F's (A&B!), a dome, a diner, and a former SP articulated coach.

The Expo '74, trains 791 and 792. When I rode it from Spokane to Seattle, it had a former GN dome coach, former SP articulated coach, and some sort of a snack car that I don't remember. I thought about listing that one, but since it was a special run only for the World's Fair, I didn't.

Silver Palm
Three Rivers
Kentucky Cardinal
Twilight Shoreliner
Gulf Wind / Gulf Breeze
Cape Codder
Clocker
San Diegan

Do trains like the Metroliner, Northeast Direct Count? There was even a New England Metroliner and Capitoliners.

Various Northeast Corridor Trains, Keystone Trains, and trains to Upstate NewYork were named trains, but replaced with generic Northeast Regional numbers....

That was the Gulf Breeze, not the Gulf Wind, btw.

The other one with the Hilltopper was the Shenandoah.
-Montrealer/Washintonian
-ACE service ran as far north as Springfield, MA (useless info there), but it's gone.
-Kentucky Cardinal
-Houston section of the Texas Eagle (521/522)
-the split section of the Silver Meteor to Tampa (87/97 and 88/98), and the split section of the Silver Star (81/91 and 82/92).
-Palmetto reduced to Savannah from Jacksonville

Here's an odd one: Cape Codder service... not sure that counts

Where did the Shenandoah, Hilltopper, and Mountaineer run to from Roanoke?

Thank you in advance.

The Shenandoah did not serve Roanoke. It operated between Cincinnati and Washington via the former B&O St. Louis line. The Hilltopper operated from Cattlesburg, Kentucky, (Tri-State Station) to New York via Roanoke. It made its last runs on Sept. 30, 1979. The Mountaineer was a Chicago-Norfolk train that split en route from the James Whitcomb Riley (now the Cardinal). It, too, operated via Roanoke and was replaced by the Hilltopper.

How did the Hilltopper get from Roanoke to New York?

Thank you again.

Hilltopper, Riley, Shenandoah, etc had politicians with seniority who looked out for their interests. That can be very helpful at budget time.

The Ann Rutledge used to run from Kansas City to Chicago via St. Louis, following the route of the current River Runner and the Lincoln Service. You can follow the same route on about the same schedule today but you have to change trains in St. Louis.

Lone Star
Abraham Lincoln (Milwaukee-St. Louis through train)
There was a New York-Detroit train in the 1970s that ran through Ontario...Niagara Rainbow, maybe?

I think the original Vancouver-Seattle Amtrak offering was called the "Pacific International" before getting killed and eventually resuscitated as a Cascades train. Seattle-Portland trains in the early days were called the Puget Sound and Mount Rainier, though those services continue uninterrupted as Cascades. The (Missouri) Mules fit that category too.
