Zephyr, Chief and Capitol Ltd Today
Author: mp16

Capitol left Chicago tonight on time at 6:40 pm.

Zephyr ETA 7:11 pm(2 hrs., 14 mins. late)
Chief ETA CHI 7:00 pm (3 hrs., 45 mins. late)

Too bad the Cap could not have waited for connecting passengers.

There's 48 as a mop-up train for some. For the rest, I suppose they valued the Pittsburgh connection with the Pennsylvanian over who's left.

When connecting through Chicago west to east, I ALWAYS stay overnight to avoid this situation.

This is when it would be nice for the Lakeshore to split at Cleveland and head to Pittsburgh/Philadelphia.

That will never happen because of crew and equipment issues.

Like adding through cars between the Pennsylvanian and Capitol Limited, this has been under consideration more than twice in the past ten years.

One section splits at Cleveland for NYC via Pittsburgh/Philadelphia.

The other section goes to Albany with either a split there to NYP and Boston, or continues on to Boston only with a corridor train meeting the Lakeshore from NYP.

Then instead of making a few people miss connections, you make an entire trainload of people late by at least an hour, likely more. The rest of the passengers on 30 have connections to make too. There no easy solution, but I can't fault Amtrak for wanting to run as much on time as they can.
