https://history.amtrak.com/archives/north-carolina-dot-locomotives How many more engines would be required to handle all NC state supported operations? Posted from Android Date: 09/17/17 09:20 Re: NC DOT locomotives Author: PHall How many State supported services are there in NC?
Date: 09/17/17 09:57 Re: NC DOT locomotives Author: MartyBernard A place to start is here: https://www.thedieselshop.us/NCDOT.HTML
And the Amtrak timetable. Marty Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/17/17 09:59 by MartyBernard. Date: 09/17/17 16:48 Re: NC DOT locomotives Author: ctillnc 8 operational F59s, I believe, although one or two are often in the shop for PTC or Tier 4 retrofit. Two Charlotte-Raleigh and two Raleigh-Charlotte trains daily. A third frequency is scheduled to start next year. These numbers don't include Amtrak's Carolinian which (usually) runs with an Amtrak locomotive.
Date: 09/17/17 22:35 Re: NC DOT locomotives Author: GP25 I wonder why NC DOT got the older F59 units.
And not get anything newer?? Jerry Martin Los Angeles, CA Central Coast Railroad Festival Date: 09/18/17 06:42 Re: NC DOT locomotives Author: ctillnc Purchase price of a used unit plus rebuild cost is far less than purchase price of a new unit. And the rebuilt F59s are reasonably reliable... more reliable than the Amtrak P42s, anyway.

Date: 09/18/17 16:09 Re: NC DOT locomotives Author: ctillnc Sure, that's a factor in buying used versus buying new. If I were putting millions of miles on the units, I'd buy new. But the NCDOT units get 300 miles a day with tender loving care after each round-trip.
