More NEC Amfleet carpets
Author: GenePoon

All the photos in this post and the subsequent one were taken inside
ONE Amfleet coach this morning.

Wick Moorman, did Norfolk Southern's (public excursion) cars run around looking like this?

Richard Anderson, did Delta fly planes with carpets looking like this?

Joe Boardman, did Amtrak...OH NEVER MIND

Gene,

While the photos are at least informative. There is another reason that they don't get cleaned. If a car is running well they don't dre take it out of service. They just don't have the spares. That and I'm sure they don't have the people they need to clean them if they did.

So what do car cleaners do all night?

Or, as you suggest, perhaps there aren't any...were they laid off by Boardman to
prop up the "profitable" Northeast Corridor?

Looks like Amtrak needs to give sippy cups to everyone having a beverage....

In all my European travels, I've never seen anything quite as bad a this.

Q: < So what do car cleaners do all night? >

A: Spill coffee while they are sitting around.

Another fine mess the Utica Bus Driver has left us.

Knowing they are going to replace the carpeting and seat upholstery, they don't care how much of a Penn Central Roach Coach Amfleet has turned into on their "profitable NEC".

Wonder if the ones in Chicago and west coast are this disgusting.

Maybe I should bring a rag or toiler seat paper protector to sit on their filthy upholstery.

A passenger on my Tri-Rail trip yesterday spilled a large cup of soda on the linoleum (?) floor coming out of Pompano Beach. By Lake Worth, when the conductor came through for the first time, the liquid had mostly dried.Into a sticky mess. He said the car number and north end into the radio.

When we arrived at the end of the line, 15 minutes later, there was a maintainer, a service cart, and a squirt bottle of cleaner waiting when then doors opened at the platform. There's a 15-20 minute break at the end of the line, enough time to address minor issues like this.

Does the condition of the carpeting say something about the ride quality?

I was on two Am-2 coaches on the Lake Shore Ltd from Schenectady to NYP in July. One was shabby inside; one was much better. Both rode like $hit once at 50MPH. Everything shook and rattled. Both inferior to the Am-1 Biz-Dinette I came in on from Chicago, which was in pretty good shape overall.

If the US spent half as much as the EU does on rail, it wouldn't be an issue.

Gene,
Could I suggest that when you post shots like this you also include the car number? It makes it easier for tracking the car down.

I take the regional almost weekly STM-BOS and can vouch for the poor condition of many of the Amfleet coaches. Even the Acela is beginning to look shabby. Last time on Acela I observed many broken tray tables and seat back pockets.

Easy way to address this problem. Linoleum in all short to medium distance coaches. See how it works and if travelers will accept it before placing in the entire coach fleet. Carpet absorbs odors and bacteria and requires a lot of effort and expense to clean. The vast majority of pre-Amtrak coaches had linoleum. Since so many on TO want us to return to the good old days of rail passenger service, this would seem like a no-brainer. Santa Fe was one of the few who used carpeting in coaches. UP only used them in their dome coaches.

The HEP's Heritage coaches had a brown, rubberized flooring with 1" round raised circles under the seats, though a carpet down the aisle.

Are they doing any truck overhauls in addition to sprucing up the interiors?

Check out the cleaners on the Shinkansen Bullet Train. It is at the 3:05 mark.

Yes, the beyond filthy carpet condition and smell causes the ride to totally suck. Its just another example of overlooking attention to detail on things passengers can see and smell. Its bad PR and disgusting!

Also, makes one wonder if some of the stains are attributable to pet urine and droppings.
