On the GO to Unionville
Author: ghCBNS

GO Transit recently added some mid-day round trips on the Stouffville Line between Toronto and Unionville, Ontario allowing for a quick roundtrip. Here's the Bombardier Cab Car trailing the eastbound train at Toronto Union:

IMHO......an attractive new image compared to that dowdy old scheme that's been around from the '70s. But as Kermit says.......

Great photo series, and I appreciate the bus shot. BTW, the new GO scheme is like the old Chicago CTA bus scheme, only reversed.

Toronto inspires me. They are trying to break the strangle hold of auto-highway interests on North America. New lines and services with modal connection. Go GO!

Traffic congestion in Toronto is getting terrible and the more GO the better! The 401 across Toronto is currently the busiest highway in North America and will probably hit a half million vehicles PER DAY within a couple of years:

401: 416,500 between Highway 400 and Weston Road
427: 400,700 between Burnhamthorpe and Rathburn Roads.

In the US some highways are approaching 400,000 per day:

405 in LA: 377,500
I-75 / I-85 Atlanta Downtown: 358,390

Here’s the 401 at the Don Valley Parkway taken from a GO Bus last Saturday morning. The bus was replacing the normal GO Train from Barrie as weekend trackwork was being done on the Newmarket Subdivision to allow for an increase in train capacity as more lines get all-day train service......not just rush-hour. The main Lakeshore line has even gone from hourly to half-hourly all-day service.

Nice update. Notice the buses reverse the green from the rail coaches. Fresh look.

Nice series, the cab car looks as though it's been designed.

Did some of those GO Transit bus routes replace Gray Coach Lines ?

What I like about the train seats is a wide headrest with a suggestion of a seatback wing so you can nod off without getting whiplash. VIA has it too. Of course Amtrak ripped all theirs out with the re-upholsteries in the late 1980's, and they never came back.

Grey Coach was a suburban bus division of the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) and did operate some of the original GO bus routes. It was sold off by the TTC in the early ’90.

GO’s bus routes are now much, much more extensive than what Grey Coach once operated.

Those double deckers look like longer versions of the Alexander-Dennis Enviro 400.

They are Enviro 500s. Longer and squatter. There have been three versions, each one with a lower profile than the previous one (4.2m, 4.1m, 3.9m). Each successive order consequently has greater route availability. The most recent order is manufactured at Alexander-Dennis' Vaughan, Ontario plant instead of being imported from Falkirk.

How many feet long are these double decker buses ?
Why not an articulated New Flyer transit, like the PNW's Sound Transit has, with suburban seating ? I think they are 60 feet, which is something like driving a 35' vehicle with a 25' trailer.

Enviro 500s in the U.S.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Dennis_Enviro500#/media/File:ST_91501_on_display_at_Union_Station_(22768860229).jpg

Community Transit in Snohomish County, Washington currently has a fleet of 22 Enviro500 MMC coaches. After its fleet of 23 Enviro500 coaches proved to be well suited for the agencies commuter routes with direct peak-hour service to Downtown Seattle, the agency placed an order for 22 Enviro500 MMC coaches in 2014 and has 17 more coaches on order.

At the same time as Community Transit placed its order, neighboring agency Sound Transit, the regional operator in Seattle, Washington, also ordered five Enviro500 MMC coaches. The agency used the coaches to test their suitability for use Sound Transit Express routes.[27] After proving to be successful, Sound Transit placed an order for an additional 32 Enviro500 MMC coaches.

Kitsap Transit has ordered 11 Enviro500 MMC coaches to provide higher-capacity on its busiest ferry feeder services.
