Derailment in New Orleans
Author: funnelfan

There is a report of a derailment in New Orleans, but lacks many details. Supposedly 5 autoracks, a tankcar, and four empty passenger cars were overturned. I'm interested in finding out which passenger cars were involved and three or four ex-NP passenger cars from the late Mike Gelhaus collection recently went to New Orleans.

The NP cars were not involved. Looks like fake news.

It's not "fake news." He's reporting a news item to us, from a legitimate source, and asking if anyone knows which passenger cars they were. What's "fake" about that?

That the NP cars or for that matter any passenger cars were involved. Every news reporter is clearly a railroad rolling stock expert right? Does anyone have photos of the alleged passenger cars involved? And I know for a fact they aren't the NP cars because I own them.

I'm only guessing, of course, but the reporter was probably referring to overturned auto rack cars -- which we know carry passenger cars (autos).

"Among the derailed cars, 4 cars were empty passenger cars, 5 were cars carrying vehicles and one car was a tanker, potentially carrying an unknown hazardous material."

Doesn't really sound that way since he referred to "vehicles".

"Fake" implies deliberate deception. The original poster gave a link to a news item that said passenger cars were derailed. That news could be wrong, but very unlikely fake. The original poster then ASKED if certain passenger cars were involved. He did not say definitively that they were. So no fake news there, either - just a question. The term "fake news" has it's place, I guess, but not when people just make honest mistakes or ask questions.

I'm glad your cars didn't derail. Sorry if I came across as overly snappy.

Maybe the term 'ignorant news' would be more apropos.
