Multiple follies, delays, Amtrak WAS-Virginia-Florida route

....And NOT ONE can be blamed on CSX and Hunter Harrison:

Silver Meteor 97(22) set out AMTK 88 at Haines City, FL for flat spots. Unit had
been inspected at Richmond by Amtrak Mechanical and released. It
then set off multiple defect detectors with unacceptable wheel-to-rail
impact, potentially damaging or breaking rail, until it was ordered by
CSX to be set out, if the train was to be allowed to continue. Lost almost
two hours.

Silver Meteor 97(23) set out AMTK 824 at Savannah, unable to lead. Lost five
hours.

Carolinian 80(24) Viewliner Baggage 61004 inspected at Petersburg, set out
at Richmond bad order; lost about an hour at both stations.

Silver Starvation 92(23) AMTK 117 set out at Savannah for bad wheels, added AMTK 86
originally assigned to 90(24) as replacement. Lost almost three hours.

Palmetto 90(24) 3 hr 19 min initial terminal delay waiting for replacement
unit AMTK 113, set out at Savannah from 53(23).

AutoTrain 53(23) set out AMTK 113 at Savannah for 90(24)

Well at least they did not try to rush the 88 up to Savannah as a replacement. Although, I bet they thought about it.

How does a Viewliner get inspected and a handful of miles later is set out. Or were they told OK to Richmond but no further?

Amtrak doesn't seem to have an effective system for examining service failures. Learning from mistakes, knowing what else to look for, teaching your inspectors and sharing best practices.

I had hoped Wick Moorman would initiate a program to help inspectors and improve quality control. NS has it, it doesn't seem like Amtrak has made much progress.
