A Message from DJ Stadtler - Leadership Update

> To all Amtrak employees,

> An important part of our reorganization is to make sure we have
> strong leadership talent in critical roles. On behalf of the
> Executive Leadership Team, I am pleased to announce the following:

> Robin McDonough is named Vice President, Human Resources, reporting
> to me. Byl Herrmann, who had been serving in this role on for the
> past year, will return to the Law Department as Vice President, Sr.
> Managing Deputy General Counsel. Robin and Byl have already begun
> this transition but Byl will remain in the VPHR role through the
> beginning of February 2018.

> Robin will continue the transformation of the HR function that Byl
> began earlier this year. In 2017, the HR team emphasized a return to
> the basics -- including service, efficiency and talent. In 2018, we
> believe Robin will add even more value to the function. In her
> previous role as Vice President, Network Support, Robin oversaw the
> HR function within Operations. She knows what good talent looks like
> for Operations, and she knows how HR can deliver. This is an
> essential quality for us as we seek to improve safety and customer
> service.

> Jeanne Cantu has been promoted to Assistant Vice President, Network
> Support, succeeding Robin and reporting to Scot Naparstek. Jeanne
> will be moving from the Finance team, where she had already been
> working closely with Operations through her role as Senior Director,
> Business Planning and Controls. Jeanne's expertise in both functions
> makes her a natural fit for this role. Robin and Jeanne have already
> begun to transition Robin’s work to Jeanne.

> Caroline Decker is named Vice President, Northeast Corridor Service
> Line, reporting to Stephen Gardner, Executive Vice President and
> Chief Commercial Officer. The move is effective January 1, 2018.
> Caroline succeeds Mark Yachmetz, who remains with the team as Vice
> President, Acela 2021 Program, where he will be exclusively focused
> on delivering the next-generation of our Acela service, including
> our new high-speed trainsets. In her previous role as Vice President
> of Government Affairs and Corporate Communications, she led Amtrak’s
> efforts in Congress to secure annual federal funding while providing
> strategic leadership on corporate messaging. In her new role, she
> will focus on increasing customer satisfaction and driving net
> revenues through innovation for our flagship products and prepare
> for future growth across the NEC.

> Bob Dorsch is named Vice President, Long Distance Service Line,
> reporting to Stephen Gardner. The move is effective January 1, 2018.
> Bob succeeds Mark Murphy, who will be retiring from Amtrak after a
> successful 40-year career with Amtrak. Bob previously served as Vice
> President, Product Support and Management within the Marketing and
> Business Development group. In his new role, Bob is responsible for
> leading our efforts to modernize and improve our product, deliver
> these services more efficiently and at a lower cost, while also
> providing a higher level of customer satisfaction.

> Peter Wilander is joining Amtrak on January 4, 2018 as Vice
> President, Product Development and Customer Experience, reporting to
> Stephen Gardner. Peter joins us from Gate Group, a leading global
> provider of products, services and solutions for onboard experience,
> where he served as Chief Commercial Officer. Peter has more than 35
> years of airline industry experience, having previously held the
> role of Managing Director Onboard Services for Delta Air Lines, where
> he was responsible for the worldwide catering operation, food &
> beverage design and implementation, onboard retail programs, and crew
> service delivery procedures. In his new role, Peter will establish
> Amtrak’s customer service standards. Assisting Peter in his
> transition will be Tom Hall, VP of Passenger Experience, who will be
> retiring at the end of March, 2018, from Amtrak after a successful
> 40-year career at Amtrak.

> Also, Dennis Newman joined Amtrak on December 4, 2017 as Vice
> President, Schedule and Consist Planning. He reports directly to Tim
> Griffin, Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer. In his
> new position, Dennis is responsible for the execution of Amtrak’s
> network strategy through schedule planning and capacity management
> of trains in the Northeast Corridor, State Supported, and Long
> Distance services. Dennis also ensures that we manage our route
> capacity in way that optimizes load factor and revenue, and stays
> responsive to market conditions and demand. Dennis was most recently
> Vice President, Sales, at Dish Network. Prior to that, he was Vice
> President, Network Planning at Delta Air Lines.

> Please join me in congratulating everyone on these appointments –
> and thank you for giving them your full support as they transition
> into these new roles.

> Regards,

> DJ Stadtler
> Executive Vice President, Administration

I am hopeful that the infusion of the identified outside talent, presumably subordinates of CEO Richard Anderson when he was at Delta Air Lines, will bring some consistency to scheduling and efficiency to equipment usage; and very much-needed standards and discipline to onboard and customer service.

Hopeful...but confident, that's another matter.

I'm intrigued that the railway and the airline workers are both covered under the same Railway Labor Act, yet the results are extremely different. Airline quality control, equipment maintenance outsourcing, etc would be strike bait on the railroads. Pilots make quite a bit more than engineers in many cases, and are paid in part based on the size / route of the aircraft they bid for.

Most airlines routinely send heavy maintenance work out to contractors, some in foreign countries. Flight attendant wages and Amtrak dining OBS etc wages are night and day. For similar jobs. Many customer facing jobs like counter and gate employees are contracted out on the airlines.

As was mentioned in the thread about the ex-con Amtrak sleeping car attendant
who was convicted and sentenced to 60 years in prison for the violent rape of a
passenger riding his train, there are many who regard Amtrak as a social welfare
program.

NOBODY at Delta Air Lines (or American Airlines, or United Airlines, or
Southwest, etc.) regards those companies as soclal welfare programs.
