The redevelopment has been talked about for years, with the proposed new tunnel it might all happen in 5-10 years. Neighborhood isn't the best. Date: 12/16/17 12:17 Re: Baltimore Penn Redevelopment Author: hazegray 30th Street Station never matched the vibe of Washington Union Station, and Baltimore Penn Station will be hard put to ever match 30th Street, IMO.
The neighborhood just won't support it... Hope but doubt that the improvements in Baltimore can start a revitalization of the area.

There are examples of urban neighborhoods that had been going through rough times which have undergone revitalization.

Heading S goes through UofB campus. For business travelers overnight at station could be attracative, catch early morningtrain to BWI or DC or NYC

There are parts of the city that are ok, but overall it is a dangerous, crime infested mess. And the area around Penn Station isn't even the worst part of the city, although you don't have to go far to be in some of those parts. Being from the area I just don't see the attraction for anyone to stay in Baltimore if they could stay in DC or Philly. Baltimore Penn is directly between the U Baltimore campus/City Arts District and the Station North nightlife area. The existing housing stock has already been exhausted and new condos are going up on land across from the parking lot adjacent to Penn Station that's being targeted for redevelopment. The city's primary art house cinema is one block to the north of the station and is flanked by sidewalk cafes that operate into the early hours of the morning. |
