I suspect the train was in push mode given the position of the locomotive.

Wow, just wow. They are still extracting victims in a mass casualty event and you are worried about a locomotive that nobody here has even seen? Really special.

Multiple fatalities, many injured, and someone's worried about a damn piece of equipment.

Some members don't like the fact that there is a lot of speculation here on Trainorders concerning this accident. Should we be purely emotional? This web site is primarily for speculation, however inaccurate or silly. So speculate all you want, folks. Let the reader sort it out. No need for scolding!

Word on the street is the Charger is on the other side of the wreckage, out of view.

If speed was a factor in this accident, why are these cars off on the inside of the corner?

The locomotive and at least two other passenger cars are on the opposite side, so the derailment could have broken the train in two with the bridge in the middle, with the rear coming up on the inside and the front on the outside.

The lead loco and the first 3/4 of the train went off the OUTSIDE of the curve. With that essentially clogged up with the equipment, the remaining three or so cars kinda stayed on track then dropped to the inside and off onto I-5.
Physics really, things will travel the path of least resistance.

Because once the train starts to derail the speed decreases rapidly and the following cars push against the derailing cars which cause them to start derailing also in an accordion type fashion. This causes those cars to start derailing in a left-right-left-right fashion putting the equipment on both sides of the track. Add in the fact that there is a bridge with girders involved, which can deflect the equipment in various directions as the cars hit the girders. All the cars are not on the inside of the curve, some are on the outside also, most likely the lead engine and cars. I think we will find out in time that the cars on the inside of the curve are the ones near the end of the train.

Why don’t you ask the families of the people who were onboard 501 this morning? I’m sure they like you are most concerned with the disposal of the Charger.

People make me sick.

And then you ask it again... You are probably too young to understand, but nobody should be concerned about the condition of the equipment immediately following an incident like this. That Charger is toast, you may stop worrying about it now.

There is some overhead views now coming out. Most of the train is on the other side from initial views.

~Speculation!~

That P42 is interesting. 4200 on the tail and 4400 on the point. That's a LOT of HP for those small cars. Not saying it's a factor but the P42 takes a while to spin down and could have still been loading and shoving the train as it was derailing. Odds are it made a bad accident an aweful one. The Charger is enough to handle the entire train. I hate that Talgo crap, just looking at it gives me the creeps.
Cheap shit cars, and now this. My thoughts and prayers to all involved and I hope that the mutual friends from TO who may be on the train will be found safe and sound...
