Rail Terrorist Monitoring
Author: webmaster

Sorry for the dumb title, don't know what else to classify this under.

Big brother has arrived in my home city under the umbrella of rail safety. Using grant money, the Los Angeles County Sheriff has installed license plate readers on main streets in front of Metrolink stations in Santa Clarita. This way they can respond in the event a terrorist on a watch list happens to drive by the train station. The idea is that that a terrorist may want to blow up a train or something. If any terrorist are reading this then you may want to use a rental car or Uber to get to the train station to blow up a Metrolink train. When the system is not catching terrorist, the cameras will be monitoring passing automobiles looking for registered owner connected warrants.

Well, maybe they know something we don't. There are a lot of terrorism attempts that we never hear about.

They have them installed at several LACMTA Park and rides as well. Norwalk is one of them...

Police departments across the country are using them every day.

They are a regular feature in south Florida. Police use them to ID Silver Alert (elderly people who drove off), Amber Alert, stolen or wanted cars, etc.

Many went up last year at all the major intersections in Torrance Ca. It has been paying off in the South Bay area.
The major benefit is to capture criminals who have just committed a crime or for stolen vehicles.

The real major benefit is to catch people with expired reg, by 3 days! Ask me how I know.....

Take a photo of my license and registration. I don't care. I'm not driving anywhere I'm not supposed to. My freedom is not affected in any way.
Save some lives in the process great!

I was just going to say: What is the monetary component? Right there is the main reason. Catch people who havnt paid their license fees. Scanning for terrorists is a joke.

Some folks describe that as an incidental benefit, others describe it as the real purpose.

Not unlike local police accompanying DEA/ICE when they search an Amtrak train. You may not find any undocumented visitors, but you may find a guy with some weed, another guy with a few warrants, etc. You couldn't search the train on that basis, but if you're there for another reason...

EXACTLY! What is the legal expectation of privacy while driving down a public street???

It seems like this money would be better spent installing cameras on RR crossings to catch motorists trying to "beat the train" or run around the gates. Similar to the red light cameras, and maybe people would think twice about it. I know I do when I'm at an intersection that I know is camera equipped.

You only think that because nothing bad has come of it yet. My friend used to keep an extra car around to loan to friends or coworkers who were down and out. Unbeknownst to him, somebody he loaned the car to had a shoplifting problem.

Who do you think got arrested and had to spend $25,000 on an attorney?

Unintended consequences? :-)

Most of the LA County Sheriff Department's "Black and Whites" already have the licence plate readers on them.
So you've probably already been scanned multiple times. If you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to worry about.

Not stated, but if several station parking lots have license plate readers, they can search for the same vehicles showing up at more than one location. Useful if criminals are hitting the parking lots to break into vehicles.

Have you heard about what China is doing? They are installing millions of cameras around the country tied into a system with facial recognition software. Eventually everyone will have their ID and face in the system. If they are looking for you, they will find you. A UK reporter decided to test the system and see how long it took to find him. IIRC, it was a matter of hours. How's that for Big Brother watching?

It never ceases to amaze me how we are making a communist country rich (while taking away our jobs) so it can exploit people in ways that never would be allowed here and also build up its military. But hey, we love those beautiful model trains and other goodies made over there.
