Both northbound and southbound "Salukis" have a array of equipment past and present including a ex-Pennslyvania 1951 diner as axle requiremwnt cars. Champaign, Illinois

So how many cars are normally revenue cars?

That 391 is frankly an embarrassment! What does the public think when they see that pull up?

Looks like a truncated Three Rivers.
Amtrak should make lemon-aide out of lemons and do storage mail or package service between Chicago and Carbondale.

Three coaches and a cafe/business class.

Not a former PRR diner.

I would venture that the general public does not really care what it looks like. If they bought a ticket I would think they only care about a safe, comfortable, perhaps on-time ride!

Would no train look better??

It looks like it could be diner 8530, converted from ex-PRR parlor car "Molly Pitcher"

My bad. 8530 must have been a PRR car built for the "Senator". I was thinking of the "Congressional" diners which were twin-units.

They should have put the diner next to the passenger cars so the crew would have a nice place to hide.

Here's a discussion on the reason for the minimum-axle requirement:

It is a shame that the underlying problem has not been solved. Then again, if forcing Amtrak to ferry unused cars solves the problem why work on it any further.

I saw 8530 on 392 (16) last night and was surprised that there were lights on considering its purpose in the consist. Wonder if they had heat going as well.
