Amtrak to Scrap Mt Adams Talgo
Author: thaddeh

Received a letter today that states that Amtrak intends to remove and scrap the Mt Adams Talgo from Ft Lewis by April 15th. They will make it available for inspection on March 29, but this strikes me as odd.

In EVERY other case involving pending litigation they cannot scrap the equipment, be it a burnt out bus, crashed airplane, or wrecked Superliner.

Decision made by Airline Boy?

Maybe Airline Boy needs the cash. He's already going to put off paying his
bills by a month.

And...the Mt. Adams set is not owned by Amtrak. So it is not Amtrak's to
scrap, unless they have paid the owner, the State of Washington, for it,
or if some legal arrangement has been worked out.

Washington purchased the trainset in 2004.

Don't the lawyers and civil engineers have to study the wreckage for crash worthiness ?

This board is so entertaining.

Blast Amtrak for poor customer service.

Amtrak hires a person who has demonstrated experience with improving customer service.

Blast Amtrak.

Rinse and repeat.

There was not much left to scrap. Seems to me that the remaining usable parts should be saved, and then could be used as needed in the future.

Meanwhile, let us hope the two Wisconsin talgos are refitted and read to GO!

I call BS.

As others have stated, unless all plaintiffs have either had their day in court or settled otherwise, NOTHING is going to be scrapped for years.

Also, we have no idea of exactly what you are talking about. The name Talgo is a branding name. Do you mean a car, a train set, what? If you are referring to just the engine, that would never be called a Talgo.

I’m curious who sent this alleged letter?

And in what capacity would the OP be on the list to receive such a letter?

Posting a photo of the letter would go a long way toward establishing credibility.

Using the search function shows that he has been posting only for a few months. However in his first posted, he stated the was a passenger on the wrecked Talgo:

Maybe that is why he has a letter.

It could be that Ft. Lewis wants the space back and since the bulk of the physical investigation is over, the wreckage is being moved to a less accessible site, with eventual intention of beyond scrapped. Also, since the general cause of the accident is known, not all of the pieces may need to be saved. I am sure some pieces will be saved, like the locomotive and portions of the train cars that were the most significantly involved.

The letter sounds like it is giving the interested parties the one last chance to inspect the train st it’s current location.

The Mt Adams is the name of the Talgo train set..not a car...not an engine.

It’s the politicans and the Washington Dept of Transportation ... hide the evidence, cover their butts.... scrap it, blame the engineer, case closed. next!

Ain't nothing to hide at this point. The trainset was pretty much been scrapped when it made the right turn onto I-5...

Sure. Here's the letter. I have only redacted my full name and address.

My girlfriend received the same letter. We both intend to bring legal action.

Sure, it was like lightning hitting as far as our luck of the draw goes, but that does not change the fact that my Talgo car landed upside down on Interstate 5 and was hit by a semi truck. I'm pissed. Amtrak has lost every shred of confidence and trust that I had in the place to be a safe and reliable mode of transportation.

And as far as my track record goes, I now remember why I let my Trainorders account lapse the first time I had one. This place is nothing but a paid admission echo chamber save a couple of people here that I respect in person.

Oh I bet you can back THAT up with facts. You may proceed ad lib.

Was removing the Pacific Parlour Car "Sky" Anderson's attempt to improve customer service?

Perhaps the airlines should bring the Douglas DC-7 back too. That's a contemporary piece of hardware.

It seems to me with all the demonstrated failures among the high mileage diesel engine fleet, that you would get better bang for your customer service bucks by working on the engines.
