So what if the passengers get to their destination and their cars don't. What is Amtrak's policy on providing transportation for them to where they needed to go until their cars (if not damaged) can be delivered to them? Does Amtrak replace or repair vehicles damaged in route?

Before jumping to that conclusion, let's hear how bad it is. At least no one appears to have been hurt or killed.

Not exactly what Amtrak needs today, though.

You could be right. While it might be closer to making money than other trains, I do not see any party who would want to take over the operation.

I haven't seen any news story yet, so maybe this is a minor incident. Let's hope so.

Four auto racks derailed, all remained upright.
79/80, 89/90 not running through the derailment area.

2 head end carriers and 2 rear end carriers derail. Apparently brokenrail.

Thanks ctillnc and firetrain for the info.

At least some of the wheels for those cars must have stayed on the rail since the whole works did not pile up.

If a railroad derailed some autoracks, all of the automobiles would go to the crusher. I wonder what kind of settlement Amtrak will have to make to absolve themselves of all future liability?

More specific: 79/80 annulled between Raleigh and DC. 89/90 annulled between Savannah and DC. 52 and 53 of the 29th annulled.

I’m on 97, the sb Meteor, at Delmar, roughly 30 miles north of Rocky Mount, waiting for the track to reopen. Apparently the derailment occurred at MP 101, immediately north of the town of Enfield, N.C.

Well, pretty spring day out my window. . . .

Has there ever been any passenger automobiles lost in any derailment on the Auto Train? What is Amtrak's coverage for the automobiles, do they replace them, cut a check for a certain amount or tell people contact their insurance company?

In some states, the general rule of thumb is that the railroad / valet service / car wash etc is responsible for damages while the vehicle is in their care. It's possible that Amtrak's terms of carriage attempt to void that claim, but I know scratches, dented mirror, etc for which Amtrak has paid quickly and without question..

#1 or #2 track, do you know? That's right about at the intermediate just south of CP Enfield called "Quality Forest".
