Royal Gorge Scenic Cab Ride
Author: livesteamer

Just back from a camping trip to Colorado Spring and while there we decided to ride the Royal Gorge Scenic into the Royal Gorge and across the Hanging Bridge. I decided that my grandson and I needed a cab ride to "get the full effect" of riding into the Gorge. So, I paid the extra fare and my grandson got his first ever cab ride with his grandpa. Took me back to the days when my granddad (a Lackawanna train dispatcher) took me for cab rides on Lackawanna diesels and MUs all over northern New Jersey. Now it was my turn!

The highlight for my grandson was being asked to blow the horn as we entered into the narrow part of the Royal Gorge and began crossing the Hanging Bridge. When his task was completed, he returned to his fireman seat and announced "I can mark that off my bucket list. I have always wanted to blow locomotive horn." Keep in mind, he is only 13. But what a huge thrill for him and a bigger thrill for his grandpa!

Thank you to the Royal Gorge Scenic for making a memorable trip for both of us.

Sounds like fun! Glad you enjoyed it.

That engine sure looks like it came from Virginia Railway Express.

The way this reads, the train goes across the hanging bridge. I thought it went under it.

The bridge high above the Gorge, which is what you may be thinking of,
is NOT the "hanging bridge."

This is...and trains go across it.

The Hanging Bridge in Royal Gorge is a railroad engineering marvel....the girder bridge is hanging off the canyon using to steel A-frames....one rail in located over a rock ledge and second rail is over the Arkansas River.
