Amtrak Penn Station Trackwork and FL9s
Author: PhilBell4022

Hi All,

Recently there was a thread discussing Amtrak's use of CDOT FL9s and MARC cab cars during the summer trackwork at Penn Station. Does anyone know when this will begin? I have 37 rolls of film ready to see these guys leading on the Park Avenue Viaduct and I don't want to miss a trip!

Thanks in advance,

Phil

I just asked this question on a pertinent Facebook group and the answer was "June". Couldn't get more specific than that.

My goodness - you use film ? Where do you buy it ?
I don't know where you are from, but portions of East Harlem are not too safe, especially with expensive camera equipment. Watch where you go and when.

Yes, Joe I do. I mostly buy it off eBay. Can't get Kodachrome developed now so I have experimented with a lot--I guess it's trying to recapture my youth from when I had my aunt's Oylmpus Point-and-Shoot and used to go to as many places within a day's drive of North Jersey to take pictures of trains. Sadly, I lost most of those in an unexpected move.

My hope is that 125th Street Station is still someplace I can go and sit without being bothered by Police or Security guards. As far as "expensive camera equipment," My Minolta Maxxum 7000s both date to the mid-to-late '80s so if someone really tries to rip me off, I suspect they'll be handing me the camera back real fast!

The Harlem-125th Street station is still a good place to photograph trains without being bothered.

That's been my experience, too.

Wonderful! I use film as well. I take general shots and roster shots with digital but great shots are on film! What film do you use now? I have only had ""luck" with Fuji products, but they are no EK100VS or Kodachrome. However, when I project it or only hold it to the sky, the pictures come alive--instead of flat and lifeless on a computer. FL9s on the 125 Street Station? Maybe I will join you, I'm in LA, but FL9s are my #1 favorite form of motive power.

There are 2 MARC cab cars on Amtrak now, At least one is being used for crew training runs between Croton and Grand Central now.

It is my understanding that the FL9's will need some work before going into service. Not a good sign that they are still sitting in New Haven. I really hope they run this summer.

125th Street is a fine place for train pictures, but finding parking nearby is a royal pain. Park someplace else and ride a train or subway to get there.

B&H still sells film, a two block walk west from Penn Station.
