Saw this engine at the Santa Clara train station on the capital to Sacramento around 4:30 yesterday.
At first I thought it was a regular Cal Train engine with the old paint job from years ago.
Then I saw the garage door on the side of it! Someone at the station told me it was a cabbage...
I said yeah.......he told me it was a cab car only with the extra space inside now used for baggage.

How many of these are around?

Caltrans is leasing 3 of these from Amtrak (90215, 90218, 90225), mostly to use as cab-cars on the single-level “Comet” sets. As you can see, they also fill in when a bi-level cab-car goes bad-order.

These three NPCUs were rebuilt as part of the Comet Car overhaul project managed by Caltrans for additional capacity for the San Joaquins, and were painted in the (mostly) same paint scheme that Caltrain's original F40PHs were delivered in. Those F40s were purchased by Caltrans, and so the "original" Caltrans F40 livery was used for the F40 NPCUs. The three units are named Bakersfield, Oakland and Sacramento, the three end points for the San Joaquin Corridor (at the time, at least).

One of them is a regular fixture on San Joaquin #710, first train out of Oakland in the morning. It is the most common train for one of the comet consists. When the cabbage goes bad, the most common fix is to place the next best thing in front, one of the B32-8’s. My favorite Amtrak train to watch a couple mornings a week.

Wonder if the Comet consist will remain on 710 after the May schedule change where 710 will now be approximately 2 hours earlier. 712 would then run on 710’s current schedule. The new 710 will be too early in the morning to watch.
