On another thread I recall a report from the Empire State Passengers Association annual meeting in March. Someone from Amtrak put on a presentation that included a projection that diners would return to the LAKE SHORE in June and that after diner deliveries are completed this summer that sleepers would follow. An unanswered question - will the diners in the LS have full meal service (food cooked on board) or a continuation of the pre-cooked meals like the dinette presently serves.

Truncating the New York section of the Lake Shore for the period of Penn Station track work makes it unlikely, in my opinion, that any full dining service would be introduced until at least the trains are back operating through and able to be serviced at the Sunnyside commissary. I suspect Amtrak will be taxed as it is to set up some sort of temporary facility at Rensselaer. Whether they ever return, and if so in what configuration, will be interesting to see.

There is no truncating. The whole train is to run thru to BOS. Commissary is already there so getting some diner supplies in stock for the time the train runs to BOS should not be a problem.

Will Amtrak be chopping the nose hole doors in the P32 dual modes at Renssalaer, or are they doing the work elsewhere?

I think the correct spelling is "dinner" car, not "diner" car.

It's where you go to get dinner.

The schools these days.

Ha!!!

SP did have "All Day Lunch" cars...no mention of diner, dinner, whatever.
Didn't even TRY "Luncher."

But isn't a "dinner" car one that makes a lot of noise?

Are you certain? Last I heard it was still undecided, but if you are correct then that does change things -- though it might just change the excuse to claiming Boston is not equipped/trained to maintain the cars. I will still be surprised to see a diner on the LSL very soon. But then, hopefully I will be wrong.

Dining car, or diner. It's where you go to get food, whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

But I've seen it as "dinning car," which is certainly wrong, on this site many times. I could go on about other examples of lousy spelling, starting with "Amtrack" which I saw again yesterday, but I'll stop now.

With no train with a diner operating from Boston, the normal stocking would not included food for a full service diner.

If no add items stocked, it would be what is available on Boston - Washington Trains.

Since this seems to be under the category of nit picking, I’ll pile on. It’s not a dinner car, it’s either a dining car or diner: “Amtrak is taking delivery of new dining cars” or “where is the diner on this train”.A tourist operation dinner train has diners or dining cars. Continuing on my mini rant, it’s not a train car, it’s either passenger car or freight car. And a more recent twist is coach car not just a coach or coaches. Part of the new era terminology is no doubt due to the general public, including news organizations, really don’t understand rail operations at all. This is not surprising since such a small percentage of the public uses rail transportation. But you can call it whatever you like, Just ride the train and enjoy the legroom in your coach and a good meal in the diner.

Reminds me of a story I read in an old magazine.

A lady asks the dining car steward, "Is this a smoking car?"
"No", the steward replies, "This is a chewing car."

Yuk, yuk, yuk.

What about this idea...if they put the V-II diners on the train, could they stock the entire car for a roundtrip out of Chicago? It would make sense that the Chicago commissary has the ability to provision diners on long-distance trains. The Boston commissary could handle items such as drinks, chips, maybe cutlery, condiments, etc. It would make sense that the V-II diner would have more storage space than the current Amfleet diner lite. You would need to stock for 2 breakfast, 1 lunch, and 2 dinner. This would allow the whole trainset to run through to Boston and eliminate any cutting of cars on/off at Albany. Sure they might run out of dinner and breakfast items WB, but this is a common ocurrence on many Amtrak LD trains.
