Why a protect diner @NOL ?

The crescent is the only train that serves new Oreleans ... the sunset limited does not use a viewliner diner and so as the CNO !

There are 2 protect diners @ New york ! That I get .

I am getting this info form another rail forum !

What else would they do with them ?
They have about 17 or so, with a rotating 8 needed to run on any given day.

I believe there are also protect V2 diners in Chicago and Sunnyside. Chicago's diner may also be a training situation for Lake Shore and Cardinal.

Maybe the City of New Orleans will go low level. Its been discussed as soon as the new sleepers are delivered.

This would allow the Superliners to fill out other trains that need the additional cars.

It’s there to protect failures on inbound Crescent dining cars. So the Crescent never leaves without a working diner. Remember, NOL has limited repair capabilities.

This raises a good point. If a diner sits in NOLA as a protect, just in case, why not use an Amfleet diner lite as on the LSL? Put the new diners into regular service on the Star or Cardinal.

Maybe Amtrak has the same philosophy as someone getting ready for a date with someone who is really attractive: Always have protection.

Still be nice if they actually had extra train sets at all terminals too just in case the one heading in is so late you don't have time to turn the consist!

Sure, no problem. Just pull out more cars from their arse and put spare trainsets everywhere.

The average Amtrak train sits in the terminal for 24 hours and you still want an extra train set?

Talk about poor asset utilization!
