Tehachapi detour locomotive crew?
Author: lanewsman

Will it be an engineer who normally works the coast route or a freight engineer familiar with the loop?

Sounds correct. And when I rode an earlier Tehachapi detour, there was also a pilot added at Merced who was qualified on the Altamont Pass route.

The regular (Coast) Amtrak crew operates the train under the supervision/direction of freight crews ("pilots") familiar with the valley line.

UP crews will be an engineer & conductor that normally work the respective territories. It takes 3 different UP crews to cover the run for each detouring Amtrak train:

1. LA - Bakersfield
2. Bakersfield - Lathrop
3. Lathrop - Oakland

Amtrak will have their normal crews on board. I believe they change engineers at Merced and Bakersfield. Not sure on the conductors. Bakersfield only is my guess.

The pool freight crews that will be on the train will change at the three named points.
