Do you know if the trip through the Valley is on the UP as it usually is on these re-routes? Would love to see it come through on the BNSF for a change. I know there have been a couple of times when they ran via the BNSF in both directions.

ALL reports this time around have hem on former SP Fresno Line
via Manteca--Ceres--Chowicillia--Tulare--Delano CA .
I do not believe the Amtrak detorus use BNSF former ATSF anymore.

It has certainly been a while but I keep hoping. I would think that Amtrak could pick up some additional revenue by routing these detours over the BNSF Stockton Sub and stopping in some of the San Joaquin cities. When they re-route over the UP, us Valley folks have to go up to Oakland/Emeryville and spend the night to enjoy the ride over the Tehachapi and the same thing on the return plus the overnight in L.A. and the OAK/LAX Amtrak ticket, it makes for a very expensive little mini-vacation.

Here is a photo from the archives that I shot in 2005 of #11 on the BNSF tracks shortly after crossing the San Joaquin River here in Fresno.

Get real folks. It is a DETOUR missing every stop between LA and Oakland. Amtrak is not rerouting the Coast Starlight for the fun of it. Additional crew expense to top it off.

I shot this video in 2008 of #14 crossing the river on BNSF. You can see Riverside Golf Course in the background. To the best of my memory, this is the last time any of the Starlight re-routes used the BNSF Stockton Sub. I believe this is the time that #11 & #14 had a meet just east of the Loop somewhere.

Indeed. Come on folks, these trains are not run for hobbyists; they're run to provide a public service. Amtrak is not Via.

So they really don't need to apologize to you!

Once again, you're painting with WAY too broad of a brush. Last time I rode "The Canadian," there were a lot of locals using it as the transportation it was intended as. And shall we talk about their Windsor - Quebec City trains?

It's a given that corridor trains are important; no one argues that. It's the LDTs that are controversial in some circles.

As a longtime member of the San Joaquin Valley Rail Committee, I can tell you for certain that this matter of Starlight re-rout intermediate stops via the BNSF Stockton Sub has been talked about with BNSF/Amtrak/CalTrans.

And when you said "Amtrak is not Via," you didn't draw that differentiation. That's why I said you're painting with too broad of a brush. When I was on "The Canadian" I remember chatting with quite a few Canadians who were using it as intended.

Why do so many participants here on Trainorders, such as yourself, have such a "hard on" over taxpayer money being used to prop up long-distance, inter-city passenger trains? It's their "A - number one" whipping boy. Then, they'll totally gloss over, ignore or even defend practices of taxpayer money being used to prop up things as diverse as (A.) commercial air services, (B.) legal defense funds for illegal aliens, (C.) gender re-assignment surgeries for convicted murderers, (D.) fiscal support of tobacco farmers, (D-1) fiscal support of cancer research, and (E.) endless studies of the mating habits of the yellow-bellied South Dakota snail darter.

This list is by no means all-inclusive.

I just don't get it.

I agree with you CA since The Reindeer can't accept the truth either!
