Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC
Author: cozephyr

Amtrak California Comet coaches moved from California via Chicago to Avondale, CO, May 11, 2018. The Southwest Chief, train 3, set off the coaches at La Junta, CO. Amtrak 154, P42DC, took the 7-cars to Avondale via BNSF's Pueblo Subdivision.

Amtrak California purchased 14 Comet IB rail cars from NJ Transit in 2008 for $75,000 per car. Caltrans paid approximately $20 million to have these former commuter cars refurbished and reconfigured to serve as intercity coaches at Amtrak's Beech Grove Shops.

Thanks for sharing. I hope they look as nice on the inside as they do on the outside.

My understanding is that basically the interiors were refitted from the Horizon car parts bin. So basically they're Horizon cars on the inside.

They're pretty nice on the inside for a short distance car.

Nice photo and video. I agree -- too bad this isn't a connection to the Santa Fe Super Shief.

They couldn't just head south on the Coast Starlight from Oakland to LA, or does that violate PV-like policies, being Amtrak does not have title to these cars ?

Perhaps the answer would be that Amtrak has a contract with California like they do with Michigan, it's not an issue?

Not sure how the Starlight would get the cars to Pueblo, CO.

About as easily as the route they took from Oakland to Chicago, then back west to LA Junta. They could have gone south to LA, then east on 4 to La Junta.

guess the whole advantage is dropping cars off of 3 is a daylight drop and move, in past they would drop at denver then the next day run the joint line with directional running one crew either way

While yes, those were rebuilt into Comet IBs, I will always think of them in their original form as Penn Central Jersey Arrow Is from St. Louis Car.

Had they gone south on the Starlight, that would require the Starlight to enter the Oakland yards, between Emeryville and Oakland and this is a one to two hour delays.

These delays have been a problem for years and have been covered on past TO posts of folks asking and bitching about how long it takes.

Is there any reason why they didnt drop off the Cars in Denver.
And have the cars go to TTC from Denver?

How long is the scheduled dwell time at Denver? If it's less then 30 minutes then it's a no-go.
