Passenger Trains > Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTCDate: 05/12/18 18:48 Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: cozephyr Amtrak California Comet coaches moved from California via Chicago to Avondale, CO, May 11, 2018. The Southwest Chief, train 3, set off the coaches at La Junta, CO. Amtrak 154, P42DC, took the 7-cars to Avondale via BNSF's Pueblo Subdivision.
Amtrak California purchased 14 Comet IB rail cars from NJ Transit in 2008 for $75,000 per car. Caltrans paid approximately $20 million to have these former commuter cars refurbished and reconfigured to serve as intercity coaches at Amtrak's Beech Grove Shops. Date: 05/12/18 22:21 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: PHall They're pretty nice on the inside for a short distance car.
Date: 05/12/18 22:24 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: dan too bad that isn't the Denver connection from the chief!
Date: 05/12/18 22:36 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: GP25 Yeah I agree.

I agree -- too bad this isn't a connection to the Santa Fe Super Shief.
Date: 05/13/18 06:46 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: joemvcnj They couldn't just head south on the Coast Starlight from Oakland to LA, or does that violate PV-like policies, being Amtrak does not have title to these cars ?
Date: 05/13/18 10:55 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: wabash2800 Perhaps the answer would be that Amtrak has a contract with California like they do with Michigan, it's not an issue?

About as easily as the route they took from Oakland to Chicago, then back west to LA Junta. They could have gone south to LA, then east on 4 to La Junta. Date: 05/13/18 12:36 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: dan guess the whole advantage is dropping cars off of 3 is a daylight drop and move, in past they would drop at denver then the next day run the joint line with directional running one crew either way
Date: 05/13/18 12:58 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: erielackawanna While yes, those were rebuilt into Comet IBs, I will always think of them in their original form as Penn Central Jersey Arrow Is from St. Louis Car.
Date: 05/13/18 13:30 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: mundo Had they gone south on the Starlight, that would require the Starlight to enter the Oakland yards, between Emeryville and Oakland and this is a one to two hour delays.
These delays have been a problem for years and have been covered on past TO posts of folks asking and bitching about how long it takes. Date: 05/13/18 15:18 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: GP25 Is there any reason why they didnt drop off the Cars in Denver.
And have the cars go to TTC from Denver? Jerry Martin Los Angeles, CA Central Coast Railroad Festival Date: 05/13/18 16:24 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: PHall GP25 Wrote:

How long is the scheduled dwell time at Denver? If it's less then 30 minutes then it's a no-go. Date: 05/13/18 22:00 Re: Amtrak California Comet Cars to CO TTC Author: Railrev dan Wrote:
