What will Amtrak look like in 2019?? I think about going to Amtrak 19&20 to New Orleans, LA next year again. Will there be LD Trains to ride in 2019?? or Maybe too Florida on Amtrak 97&98 trains to Hollywood, FL to Hard Rock Hotel& Casino.

For yours and everyone else's sake, I tried I really did.

But sorry folks, they just will not let me back into crystal ball school. I have failed out too many times.

So sorry, you will need to find some one that has passed the crystall ball exam and is now licensed to see into the future.

I did like riding 19 and 20 to New Orleans also but it always runs 3 to 4 hours late now especially southbound and I don’t like arriving at midnight, to late to eat or riding cabs, Uber or Lyft for me in New Orleans so the trip this year won’t happen. Cutting off the business class made my mind up and I am using up my Amtrak Rewards Points on motels instead. I’ve missed a lot of tourists railroads so that’s my train riding from now on, I can’t get my wife to ride Amtrak anymore especially when it takes 6 to 7 hours to go between Atlanta and Birmingham a 2 hour drive. I can sit at home and look at pine trees out a window that don’t pass by.

I know I know. But so many people want to know what is going to happen in the future I kinda sorta thought it might be worth it.

I'm sure there will be LD trains to ride in 2019. If Anderson were to try to cut them all there would be too much uproar and he would be out of a job right quick.

He will start with one, looks like the Chief at present, to see if he can end a train and keep his job. The answer may well be no, we'll see. He might be able to cut some others to three days a week this year.

PTC is his wedge this year, and it only works in a few places. Next he might try aging equipment, saying that unless Congress specifically allocates money to the long distance network, service will decline by 10% per year with an end date of 2025 or so.

I'm sure Anderson will change his tune on the LD trains if at any point the political handwringing about loss of service translates into millions of $$ for Superliner and Amfleet replacements, engines, and operations subsidy.

I don't think Anderson personally hates the idea of long distance train travel. Rather, I think he is being a shrewd businessman by attempting to cut costs, maximize revenues, and reduce inefficiencies. By breaking the status quo, he is also giving customers and Congress an opportunity to preserve these services by providing adequate and ongoing funding.

Kicking the can down the tracks only works for so long. Amtrak will be getting a gift of additional P40/P42 equipment as the state services bring their own Siemens units on line. That could allow a rebuild for some of the ancient P42 locomotives, like the P40s were updated a decade ago.

Unfortunately, given the glacial pace of Amtrak equipment procurement, he'll have a fleet of brand new diners as he's cutting dining services, and V2 sleepers as he's cutting sleeper services. Plans that were made in 2010 are out of sync with 2018/2019. He needs coaches, both single and double decks.

His reputation's bad enough with the Private Car Scenario and also which nobody wishes to publish, his cancellations of trains when a snowstorm's coming, this guy better get his act together and start learning how a railroad operates before he really gets people yelling at him!

Maybe, maybe not.

Almost without doubt, he sees a broken system which will collapse of its own weight and inertia. Maybe soon, maybe later. Tinkering with it is not going to fix anything.

I'm amazed that people aren't seeing him as a Hunter Harrison. He's there to shake the operation down to its roots, just like he (and Bob Crandall, Frank Lorenzo, Herb Kelleher, etc) did with the airline business.

This makes more sense. And for Pro to continue to pound the 'snow-mageddon'' disaster-in-waiting is also growing tiresome. The system will either survive or it won't. But trying to blame it all on refusing to operate under questionable weather conditions is hardly warranted. I hope I'm wrong, but we all need a reality check here now and then.

I will say this..... People on Trainorders just love to keep beating a dead horse! How many times in the last 3 months has this question been asked? Wait a few days/weeks, repeat...

What will Amtrak look like in 2019?? Like a ghost train haunting around rusting rails near Raton Pass.

Just my opinion but, by 2019, I hope all long distance trains are terminated. If people want to take a long distance train as a VACATION, then let them pay for such high-end services, just like in Canada.

Tell that to the people in West Virginia, New Mexico, Kansas, North Dakota that have no other modes in some places.....

Don't they have cars and roads in those states that lead to an airport?

Expect more three days/ week service . There will be LD trains , but fewer of them ...it's politics . It 'll boil down to who in DC squawks the loudest and with the most power. Just my view ... but ride 'em whenever you can ...especially the three days / week trains.
