CSX X415-18: 167 cars, 10,000 feet.

On the flyover girder bridges at AF in Alexandria. One of them is destroyed.

Amtrak and VRE via CSX are hosed.

Looked like it ruined some bridges also - I see bent girders.

CSX has reported a freight train derailment near Franconia, VA and numerous en route AMTRAK trains are being affected. CSX and Amtrak officials are currently at the site to make extimates of the damage. More information to follow when available.

The #1 track bridge was destroyed. I would expect at least #3 (far track in the photo) could be re-opened rather quickly. Presumably the "Horn Track" was not fouled, so traffic to/from NS can operate normally.

Alexandria Fire Dept. spokesman says the bridge probably collapsed
under the train due to foundations undermined by the recent rains.

That area near Cameron Run is noted for frequent flooding--it's basically an urban storm sewer--although the bridge over Cameron Run is at the bottom of the picture Gene posted. It's possible the derailment began at the bridge over Cameron Run.

Massive land slide due to eight days of rain caused this derailment according a contact at CSX.

Only Amtrak and VRE trains which run on the RF&P Sub are affected. VRE trains to Manassas, Amtrak's Crescent and the train to Roanoke are not affected since they use the Horn Track from AF Tower to the NS main.

Amtrak blanked #156 fom Roanoke this morning, so there are problems on the NS side as well. Could be out of an abundance of caution all the track structures in the area of the wreck will need a thorough inspection before any traffic will resume. 20(18) is running 8 hours late, and is still in North Carolina.

Looking at the photo taken at grade (the media photos I have seen are from
Alexandria Fire Dept.), it appears that the entire slope to the left of the
tracks may have collapsed and took the bridge and the train with it.

Was it a couple of months ago asking bride on the NS somewhere west of Harrisburgh gave way under a freight due to too much rain ?

Lucky again we are the bridge did not fail under a passenger train.

1:30 PM Saturday

Northbound Amtrak with all-Amfleet consist just entered Alexandria station tracks.
Train number not known, but clearly some trains are running.

1:45 PM Update
Northbound Amtrak with two locomotives and mixed Amfleet and Viewliner (4) consist just entered Alexandria.

4 PM Update
Northbound CSX freight with two locomotives just went through Alexandria, traveling at restricted speed.
There were 93 cars (about) so this might be the section of the 167 car freight that did NOT derail, but that is speculation on my part.

4:05 PM Update
SOUTHBOUND CSX two locomotive freight now moving slowly past station toward AF, slowing to restricted speed at this time. Now its down to about 2-3 MPH, so I'm guessing this may be the first southbound through the derailment site.

4:30 PM FINAL Update
Amtrak 91(19) leaving Alexandria. Masonic Temple in background, Alexandria Station out of photo to right beyond Duke Street.

I wonder if the four viewliner set is the 98 which cleared Ashland about 7.30 am? I understood traffic was halted by a wash out between Ashland and Doswell.

Probably the Amfleet one was 82(19) which is now at Wilmington,
and the one with Viewliners was 98(18) which is now between
Havre de Grace and Elkton at 108mph.

The Viewliner one would not be 20(18) which is between Charlottesville
and Culpeper.

156(18) , ROA-NYP was annulled this morning. So was the NYP-ROA train this evening.

82(19) RIC-NYP went thru Alexandria around 115pm or so, now between WIL and PHL.

98(18) Silver Meteor went through around 130pm, now around Elkdon.

20(18) Crescent is between Charlottesville and Culpeper, moving, but slowly...27 mph.

92(18) Silver Starvation is stopped a few miles from AF. Due to single-tracking,
it is probably holding for:

91(19) stopped at Alexandria; 195(19) is behind him.

89(19) is approaching Washington Union Station.


UPDATE 504pm: 89(19) is stopped at Washington. 195 is holding out of station.

90(19) terminated at Kingstree,SC...then went back to SAV, arriving at 1325.

89(19) to SAV terminated at WAS.

80(19) turned to 79(19) at Rocky Mount.

88(19) terminated at RVR, returned to NFK.

194(19) still at NPN

66(19) cancelled

99(19) to NPN terminated at WAS.

71(19) to NFK cancelled.
