BNSF Metra Schedule Change 6/11/18
Author: kevink

Yesterday, Metra implemented a new schedule on the BNSF line to Aurora. As could be expected, there were some hiccups including some overcrowded trains. My evening train, #1263, was initially delayed while still in CUS and then additionally at at least the first three stops because the train was packed and many people had to exit the train to let others off and then reboard. I figure it will take a week or so for everyone to get used to the new schedule. Especially since many train are now running a few minutes earlier than on the old schedule.

Text of email from Metra:
Dear Customers,

Please accept our apologies for the crowded conditions on some trains under the new BNSF line schedule. We know with major schedule revisions that changes may be needed as our customers get used to the schedule and adopt new travel patterns. This includes adding cars to some trains by subtracting cars from other trains (since we have a finite number of railcars).

However, we would first please ask for your patience. We have started to make adjustments, but we want to base major changes on more than just a few days' experiences. We are monitoring the situation very closely.

This schedule revision was prompted by the needs of the new federally mandated Positive Train Control (PTC) safety system. For more information about PTC and why these changes are needed, go to metrarail.com/PTC.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and thanks for riding Metra.

Tonight was the same bad deal. First, the concourse was jammed because of the crowd waiting for a Lisle/Naperville/Aurora train on platform 14/16. My train, 1263, was again 5 minutes late getting out of CUS. Once again the train was overcrowded leading to additional delays at the outlying stations. Metra's Facebook page has lots of posts from upset commuters.
