Passenger Trains > #3 Chief Tonight: What Hat Happened ?

The train departed Chicago at 6;55 pm(3 hrs., 55 mins. late). Due La Plata, MO 11:53 pm.

Anybody know why ? TIA

Fast typing does make one inject a wrong word. No Hat involved. Sigh !

No rested engineer available.

I guess Amtrak is still trying to run the Chicago engineer board with one or two engineers?

That would put quite a dent in most of the service, wouldn't it? Hiawathas, Lincoln Service, etc?

It is prime vacation time... and even Amtrak engineers take vacation.

As usual, a lack of realistic business sense on the part of Amtrak, comes around to hurt the passengers.

All Hiawatha engineer's are based in Milwaukee.
Most Lincoln Service engineer's are based in St. Louis (there are a couple trains that run with a CHI based crew but not many).
So that's how those services Dodge that bullet.

Interesting! Would it be safe to assume that long-distance trains like the Southwest Chief and California Zephyr have engineers based in multiple locations? If not how do they staff those trains?

Both the Chief and CZ start with Engineers out of the Chicago Crewbase. The first Engineer change on the Cheif is in Ft. Madison (KC based engineer I think).
Fist Engineer change for the CZ is in Ottumwa, IA (Lincoln, NE based engineer).
