Has there been any information about this tour around the US West? Specifically, was it just an expensive boondoggle for some Amtrak higher-ups, or was there a legitimate business purpose?

On the train, Amtrak officers met with officials from CP, BNSF and Union Pacific. They also met with their state partners from Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon and California. Joyride? Not from where I was sitting! Our agenda was full - discussing performance, PTC implementation, equipment issues (including future purchases), upcoming MofW programs and impacts, Amtrak leased property and many other "host-railroad" related issues.

Anyone that has ever been "under the microscope" on a business car trip will attest that it is not all fun.
