Passenger Trains > Old Station in DC

I'm writing an article for VRE RIDE magazine and looking for information and pictures about the predecessors to VRE's L'Enfant Station.

The Pennsylvania Railroad (doing business as the PB&W RR) had a passenger station in the District of Columbia on the same location as today's L'Enfant Station, which was served by Southern Railway and RF&P trains.  The original station was established by Act of Congress around 1909 and required for a period of 25 years to maintain a substantial station building with ticket office and baggage handing facilities.  The station building was connected to a center platform placed between two active tracks via a pedestrian subway with a elevator for baggage.  After the congressional mandate expired in 1935, the three railroads drew up plans to eliminate the station building and provide an enclosed shelter on the platform as a substitute (see the attached plan). 

Citations in Triumph VI​ and other archival materials suggest that the station was still active as late as 1943, when the Pennsy sought to further reduce the station in order to eliminate speed restrictions in effect due to reverse curves necessitated by the center platform.  The plan called for demolishing the center platform and sealing the pedestrian tunnel, substituting instead a single side platform on the north side of the tracks.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who knows about the predecessor stations on this site.  When did it finally close?  Was it seen as a substitute for the old B&P station on the mall, which was eliminated around the same time?
