Passenger Trains > NEC Suicide/Disruption, Thu. 09AUG with links to photos

On Thursday, August 9, a "trespasser incident" caused a total
shutdown of Amtrak trains on the Northeast Corridor between New York
Penn Station; and of NJ Transit trains between Metropark and
Trenton.

It was a suicide at Edison NJ.  The perpetrator (I refuse to call
this person a "victim") jumped in front of NJT Train 3701, a New
York-Jersey Avenue express, which was traveling at 90mph, from
the raised station platform, right into the windshield of the train.
 
News media spoke lightly of the engineer's injuries.  From one news
source, "The train's engineer was treated for minor injuries..."
While this does not QUITE qualify as "Fake News," it was not true.
 
His injuries were not so minor.
 
He was knocked unconscious and sustained a broken jaw, cheekbone and
eye socket...and a concussion.
 
If those mamby-pamby news reporters and "spokesmen" suffered such
injuries, they'd be reported as life-threatening.
 
From a source, I received some photos that he has already posted on
other sites, with permission to repost.  However, they are uncensored
and VERY graphic.  ANYBODY who is sensitive to photos showing blood,
guts and a dead body is forewarned.

Sorry to hear that the selfish suicide person caused injury to the engineer.  Sadly the engineer may be so mentally traumatized, let alone physically injured, that return to work will be a huge struggle. 

Many media sources tend to use "life threatening" and "non life threatening" in lieu of general terms. As you note, the injuries and PTSD can be life changing for the engineer.

Bioyans described the situation in a post the other day. On a high level platform like Metuchen, the danger of cabin penetration is extreme.

Federal laws on the books for about 20 years prevent the official release of patient information in such detail as you have posted here, which limits what “officials” can tell the news media.

Blaming “mamby pamby” reporters and spokesmen for this situation is misguided as best, and demonstrates you have no clue about the reality of trying to get accurate information from authorities.

I’m sure most reporters and news outlets would be glad to report the injuries in more detail. But when the only official line is “minor injuries,” that is what is reported.

It used to be that when someone was hospitalized, news outlets could call the hospital and get more detail about a patient’s condition. The 1996 HIPAA laws changed that.

I wonder if both NJT and Amtrak reported this as Metuchen so as to keep people away from the disgusting scene in Edison. 

NJT is critically short of engineers as it is. It was a cab car of an MLV train. His life is shattered in multiple ways
Think of all the people standing on each of the platforms that had to witness that. That could be hundreds. The station is unstaffed.

Thanks Gene for great reporting as usual. Just ignore those who are so quick to criticize. Surprised the fake news media didn't blame the train or it's engineer for killing this poor Innocent victim who was obviously illegally trespassing.  Same he couldn't fine a way that didn't hurt others to off himself. 

The media mostly reports what is relayed to them by the authorities, or at least the interpretation of what was told to them.

That was either very good aim or just bad luck. Wow.

If the engineer was knocked unconscious before being able to activate emergency braking how would the train come to a stop.

Does it have an alerted system and would come to a stop after the engineer did not acknowledge it? How long would it take?

MLV cab cars are new enough to have Alerters, as opposed to deadman throttle.

There are no longer Dead Man's pedals on any passenger equipment, or engines at NJT. Anything that had them were converted a while ago.

I'm not normally sensitive to horrific graphic images but after seeing those, I truly felt sick to my stomach for the poor engineer and responders. I can only think that hopefully there was nothing in the blood that was infectious. Good lord.

That kind of hazard is why, after evidence is gathered by police/coroner, generally wearing isolation
suits and gloves, the scene is generally taped off, NO ENTRY, and a specialized
biohazard cleanup team on contract to the agency is called.
