Newsom Vows To Scale Back California HSR
Author: walstib

California gubernatorial hopeful Gavin Newsom says he will scale back high-speed rail to a Bay Area-to-Central Valley project if he is elected, and focus on the extension to Los Angeles depending on the success of the northern segment, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Newsom also scoffed at the suggestion that the Central Valley is “nowhere,” frowning on HSR’s unofficial nickname of the train to nowhere.

You can find the full details at the Los Angeles Times’ Web site:

More people in the Valley then on the Central Coast.

Should be interesting to see how this affects the issued bonds. The assumption includes a lot of rider revenue.

My guess is that Newson is  pandering to middle of the road voters who see a scaled back HSR Project as a compromise.  Newsom will say whatever he needs to say and then turn on a California peso.  The only thing you can trust about Gavin is that his styled hair will always be in place.   The entire HSR project will continue if he is elected.

Eventually we have to catch up to the rest of the first world countries, unfortunately it cost more $$$$ here with our system of lobbyists and litigation. At least it’s a start although a pathetic one to this point.

Let's see. One segment has pretty good, kind of, rail service. One segment has none. They're going to spend tons of money building new railroad...where the service is and no railroad...where the service isn't.

Right! CAHSR will go where it is wanted and the Bay Area sphere of influence will then encompass the Central Valley as well! Smart move San Francisco! However, those TOs not living, working and/or paying taxes in California need not weinge, your part of the USA will still be the 2nd World Country that you yearn for.

What would it take for the San Joaquins to have an all rail route to LA ? Could they continue on former San Joaquin Daylight SP routing?

Well when I took the SJ Daylight last, the run from LA to "Bakersberg" was about 5 hours. Say with better equipment and an improved RofW you were to get it down to 4 hours, it would still have a very bad impact on the rest of the CAHSR's timetable. That's why from the Santa Fe used buses--about 2+ hours over 5 hours by rail, even though Uncle John had trackage rights over the Loop. The Santa Fe's all-rail LA-SF trains, The Saint and The Angel, were night trains between LA, Barstow, B'field and the Bay Area.

Sounds like it went from HSR to a commute line. Quite a few Silicon Valley worker-bees live beyond Modesto.

Rather a high speed, long distance commute line.

The route the Daylights used to Los Angeles is quite roundabout and very slow. It was the first north-south route in California built in the 1880s. Upon reaching Bakersfield, the train turned east to Mojave over Tehachapi Pass, and then south through the desert to Palmdale where it climbed a second pass through Soledad Canyon. From there, it climbs a third time and passes through a long tunnel underneath Santa Clarita before entering the Los Angeles area.

The competing freeway route goes directly south over the moutains via The Grapevine pass. Even the proposed HSR routing would make the jog out into the desert much like the current route. The problem with a more direct routing is the cost and the grades that would result, plus you would be crossing all sorts of earthquake faults.

The real solution for achieving some semblance of high-speed rail from Los Angeles to the Bay area has always been to build some sort of decent speed direct link between Bakersfield and San Fernando (the entrance into "The Valley" north of Los Angeles. That would give a one-seat ride the whole way. Even a railroad set up for 100 MPH would make for a vast improvement in transit times.

Shouldn't affect them at all, given that the California General Fund is security for bond debt service payments.

So how is a railroad to be built from Bakersfield to Los Angeles? Years ago when I drove the Grapevine- I5 the climb-descent on the northside was quite steep. Can trains now climb 10% grades?

Thank you.

The initial funding was about 40% federal, 60% state general obligation, with most of the 1A funding held in reserve, from what these sources say..

Look to the left at the old 4-lane highway right of way. Just add some short tunnels and viaducts in a few locations. Much less than the current alignment.
