I also wonder what is going to happen next. Are there still diners to deliver? Seems like a couple were still not on the roster yet. Then the bag-dorms? It seems unlikely to me that CAF will deliver many more cars without additional money from Amtrak, the delays must be costing them a fortune.

So, now that most of the diners are delivered and should have had some road time and testing - where do they go? If not going to operate on single level LD trains, perhaps Amtrak can make extra revenue by offering them to some "state supported trains" for a fee as a "lounge car" - kitchen can be closed (no food and beverage service) - just nice table seating with cushions in a car that offers double bank of windows for good Sightseeing.

Current Diner Assignments:

- Silver Meteor - 4 trainsets required for service - 1 car each = 4 Diners Needed
- Crescent - 4 trainsets required for service - 1 car each = 4 Diners Needed
- Lake Shore Limited - 3 trainsets required for service - 1 car each = 3 Diners Needed

Allocation of Diners Required for Service = 11
Diners in Available (if all delivered etc.): 25 + 1 Prototype = 26
Available Diners (26 less 11) = 15
Reserve Diners = 3 (one per named train)
Remaining Diners Available for Assignment (15 less 3) = 12

Silver Star - would be a nice to have and require 4 Diners for its trainsets.
Cardinal - would be a VERY nice to have (partiuclarly for scenery) and require 2 Diners for its trainsets

Even if Silver Star and Cardinal get Diners, that leaves 6 still available to be assigned out, 12 if they are not included in these trainsets.

Diner Options for State/Corridor Trains (just for seating and viewing pleasure):
- Vermont for leaf peeping season would be nice..... Bring back the Vermonter Box Lunch for extra fun to be had and eaten in the Diner of this train. 2 Diners
- Pennsylvanian for leaf peeping season would also be nice and a good route.....2 Diners
- Maple Leaf (or other upstate NY train) for leaf peeping season.... 2 Diners

The States could even recouperate their investment of offering this car to its patrons/passengers by charging a "Touring Class Rate" of an additional $10 to use Viewliner Diner. I could see Vermont trying this out. They've been somewhat progressive in securing passenger rail travel for their small state and saving service after the Montrealer was canned.

Back in the day, it wasn't just overnight trains that had diners. I know this is a low REVENUE OPPORTUNITY for Amtrak, but some states might be interested in paying a little premium to have the Viewliner Diners in the consist. Nice way also for Amtrak to introduce the cars more across the system. Otherwise the Viewliner Diners just sit awaiting use - not good!

So Baggage/Dorms are next? One delivered thus far? Soon as they get two and some testing done, they should go to the Cardinal......

It would be nice if Amtrak had an OPERATING plan for the new VIewliner car investment they are actively procuring and keep the gusswork at bay. THe diners are here and plans shold be made accordingly. Roll them out to the Cardinal and get a plan in place. Does the Silver Star get them with meals priced separately or the awful box meal option? Amtrak makes themselves vulnerable for crticism by not offering up more information. They should be celebrating the arrival of new equipment. Instead it's more like a somber funeral. It's actually really sad.

Who cares what they deliver, if Amtrak has no intention of using the cars as designed.

They may as well deliver the remainder as baggage cars, since the management of Amtrak is completely gone.

Box meals out of a perfectly good fully functional new diner.

Good question. Too bad you'll never get your answer here.
